This is going to sound silly..

So. How do you wear a dress with an open back or barely there back if you can't go braless?

You can get those weird sticky things at drugstores, but honestly, I tried that once and they were just too weird. I'm sorry that this isn't helpful, but I'd normally just go braless.

There are also bras that have the clasp in front and the back strip is made of soft silicone, basically transparent.
Or, a kind of corset that has a very low back, that depends on how low the dress is.
I'd go to a serious lingerie store and get suggestions there.

If you don't really need support but just need a little shaping, a Nu bra would work. Otherwise, there are bustiers with very low backs. If you just need you bra band a smidge lower, the is an adaptor you can buy. There used to be a backless bra with shoulder straps, but it seems like it might not be available anymore.

I pretty much avoid backless things due to the bra issue (and I don't think my back is that awesome to show off anyway).

I'd avoid those like the plague, but then again I'm an F-cup and my boobs would be down to my belly button if I didn't wear a bra.

Some backless dresses come with support and wiring in the boob area, a friend of mine recently got a dress like this and she was able to go bra-less even though normally she can't.

I am a dork so I probably shouldn't answer but I'm going to. I would wear a camisole in a complimentary fabric and color (in other words, I would layer). You could do the sticky boobs if you don't need much support, but they can fall off if you get sweaty. you could also wear a cardigan over it (more layering).

This! There's no way my E cups would be happy going out without a bra & I don't trust those weird silicone stick on cups.

Depends on your boob size and the dress. I've had trouble with this myself, because I wear an F cup so a regular strapless bra and the stick-on things don't cut it. Personally I would go with one of those low-backed bustier things, one that has some boning (wires galore) in it so it actually supports you. I've tried strapless shapeware squeeze-you-in type things that don't have wires in them except for the underwires, and for me those are not supportive enough and just end up riding down so my boobs end up around my navel anyway. Sexy!

I'm a C/D cup and those stickie things don't do anything for me. I need support and also hate getting sweaty under my breasts. This is probably not the best advice but what I do now is find some strong tape and put a long piece from the inner part of the breast (just beyond the areola) to the side of my rib cage, which pulls the breast to the side (I don't like the look of cleavage or the heat that is generated when my breasts touch together) and then I put another long piece angled up from the under side of the breast to the upper part of my rib cage, which pulls it up (avoiding the dreaded sweaty boob). Then I feel totally supported. I have sensitive skin so usually this ends up giving me a bit of a hickey on my breast skin but it's worth it for the few times I actually need to do it. I had a strapless bra for my wedding dress and it was pretty much useless so I employed my packing tape trick and was able to dance, bounce, etc while feeling totally secure.

I just never buy them. I used to be a full D cup, and now I'm a tighter C or looser D... still can't wear that shiitake.

I've seen bras that have some weird strap that goes down lower on your back, so you can still wear those dresses with a bra, but I've never tried one, so I can't vouch for them.

They make these bras now that have like...backs designed to look nice in open backed dresses.

Fee, that is gorgeous! I was going to suggest just wearing a really pretty bra in a complimentary colour, I've seen it done.

Yeah, I remember on Sex and the City that Sarah Jessica Parker's character would always have visible bra whenever she was wearing something like that and they just made sure that the bra was a cute one. It might not be so cute with my G cup 4-hook industrial strength bra, but if you can wear bras that have just one or two hooks, it could work.
