everyone i've talked to in jersey has gotten the nov. 5th date as the estimate for power restoration. it sucks so bad. i told my parents to drive up here if they need to.

No power, a few downed trees in the yard. My brother pretty narrowly missed being hit by one while putting fuel in the generator, but everyone's ok now. My dad's doing National Guard things elsewhere in the state, I have yet to hear from him. Hope everyone else is holding doing okay!

I feel so lucky. We never even lost power. I know people in all different parts of town who have lost power, but ours never even flickered. Seeing the damage on the news is terrible. I hope all of those who are without power get it restored quickly!

I know Fox News is wildly unpopular around here, but I love Shep Smith. Here is why: he already got visibly upset when a headline basically said this is worse than Katrina. He all but yelled that the big difference is people here are alive to tell about it.

Then, when talking about intense storms and lesser construction standards on the east coast or lack of preparation, he said we have to accept that weather patterns are changing, get your politics out of my face, accept that weather patterns are changing.

(he also cheered on air when Obama came out in support of marriage equality)

He really is the last semblance of sanity on that channel. I am amazed he's still on the air there.

Shep is one of their highest rated people. They usually have him do special coverage which is why he is doing Sandy. He probably won't do election stuff though, which is too bad, so Ill watch elsewhere for that. I think they keep him on the "human interest" stuff. He was awesome during Katrina. He almost started crying on the air and was doing anything he could to get help into areas.

We can hope that once the sand is cleared it won't be as bad as it looks. Probably not realistic though.

the power company outage maps must have been lying because according to our clocks the power came back on about 5-6 hours ago and when i left work the map still showed us as an outage.

I really enjoyed Christie's buddy buddy-ness with that announcement.

I went with my sister and her boyfriend to check some of their company's retail stores for flooding in Manhattan today, and besides the closed Starbucks, above 40th things were pretty active. The Lower East Side and SoHo were pretty creepily quiet and the power was down everywhere. We've seen some buses but the subways are still flooded.

I will be working from home for probably the rest of the week, as they are still trying to figure out the damage where I work (World Trade Center area) and besides, how would I get there? Yayy!

My boyfriend works in the financial district and his office will be closed for the third straight day tomorrow. Nuts!

I was walking around Park Slope (in Brooklyn) today, which wasn't hit super-hard. There are a ton of awnings that were damaged or completely ripped off buildings, which is sort of bizarre. I also saw a busted-up construction site that had been roped off. A number of local businesses had reopened though and people were walking around doing stuff, which was good to see. This was before the buses started back up, so while there were cars out on the road there was far less traffic than usual. Pretty surreal!

I heard from my sister in NJ and it sounds like they will be without power for at least a couple of days. They don't live on the coast so it wasn't a totally horrific scenario, but apparently the wind knocked down some trees on their cul-de-sac which knocked out the power AND blocked off traffic. My mother lives in Maryland and her power also went out. The scope of this thing is crazy!

Yeah, I don't even see a way how to get in via bus once those are fully operational. I'd have to take a cab, and frankly I cannot afford to take a cab to Chelsea and back for 3 days. Haven't received an email yet that power is back in our building, so I think I'll have tomorrow off, too, but I'm not certain.

It's official: I have to go in to school tomorrow. I usually take back roads there, but I'll have to get up early and check out the traffic reports to see how it looks.

Some friends of mine in Lower Manhattan are in need of help. Please check this out if you are in the are & able to lend a hand. The link has more info, contacts, & a signup sheet

PLEASE CIRCULATE WIDELY TO ANYONE IN NYC WHO CAN HELP:
http://tinyurl.com/nick-ventilator

Nick and Alejandra really need support. They are in a 12th floor apartment in Lower Manhattan without running water, with no power, and with no cell phone service. Nick uses a ventilator to breathe. With the power out, Nick's ventilator is running on a backup battery while a second backup battery recharges at the fire station across the street (which fortunately has a generator).

We really really need people to sign up for shifts to go to Nick & Aleja's, bring the used battery downstairs to charge at the fire station, and take the recharged battery back upstairs. This needs to happen every 3 hours around the clock until the power comes on. (Going to a hospital is NOT a viable option so please do not call an ambulance -- it is very difficult and life-threatening to move Nick and he will make that call himself if necessary.)
