I dislike how coconut/almond faux-dairy products have taken over the vegan world. I miss plain old soy. Vitasoy 4eva. Flax milk? PLEASE.

Come over here, vijita. Soy is pretty much the standard dairy sub here. Other milks are available but only really at specialty, health food stores. I've never seen things like almond or coconut or hemp yogurt or the like over here. I actually wouldn't mind a greater variety, but I still love my Alpro soy products.

I'm fine with those as long as there's a lot of variety.

Coconut in particular has gotten too popular for my picky tastes. I can't think of one coconut faux-dairy product that I like. Oh, and your non-dairy yogurts are AMAZING compared to the crepe we have here.

i'm so surprised by the coconut hate! once my coop started carrying coconut-almond milk, i totally turned my back on soy. now i buy it sometimes for cooking, and that's it.

Yeah I have to say I find unsweetened coconut almond milk to be the tastiest milk of all, even though I used to be big on soy milk before. Flax milk, on the other hand...I tried, but I just can't. It's so thin and unappealing.

I was practically dancing in the streets when the refrigerated Alpro soymilk came out, since I don't care for the shelf-stable at all. Used to have to take a 3 hour trip to Schinnen to the commissary to get decent soy milk!

Coconut has to be my biggest peeve of them all. I have always hated coconut, but I've recently come around to coconut as a savory compliment, but fork me if every goddamn vegan pie in the world that I want to make needs coconut milk.

Yeah, I only like the coconut milk ice cream and yogurt etc when it compliments the main flavor. Coconut based gluten free cookie dough ice cream? No!

My boyfriend hates coconut....but we use coconut creamer and unsweetened coconut milk for cooking...He does not mind. One coconut thing he likes is the Hail Merry's chocolate truffles...so good!

Alpro is the shiitake! I love the alpro refrigerated soy milk, but I don't mind the shelf stable stuff either. I love their yogurts, and the alpro almond milk I found in Belgium is the only almond milk I've tasted here that I actually like.
I like coconut milk as in the stuff that comes in the cans and is used in curries. I even like it in sweet things like custards or baked goods that are supposed to be coconutty (like the coconut lemon bundt cake in V'Con). But I tried the type that's supposed to be a dairy sub and I didn't like it at all. I tried it straight, in my tea, and in my cereal, and just wasn't impressed. I can't even fathom what coconut-based yogurt would taste like.

I think my pet peeve in terms of product use is faux cheese and this may have been mentioned in this thread already. I used to enjoy the creativity from restaurants but now its like 'this comes with daiya!'. I can buy daiya if I want, it'd be nice for the restaurants to bring back their original recipes.

Wow. I hadn't seen this, and am now extremely sorry I did. As to where to start, I say we begin with a hearty " F.UCK YOU" and just go from there.

vijita wrote: Coconut in particular has gotten too popular for my picky tastes. This frustrates me. A lot of people have bought into the 'soy is bad for you' foolishness and now it's all coconut and almond milk. I don't mind them in some applications but if you put coconut milk in things I think it always has a coconut flavour. My go-to milk is always soy. I am intrigued to see who breaks the story that coconut farming is destroying the habitat of the wily kabanzoor and then all the people who say palm oil is not vegan and just use coconut will have to find a new thing and suddenly durian milk will be touted as a super health good for you food that actually reverses environmental damage and feeds the starving children.

New one: when people engage you in conversations JUST to tell you that they hate what you eat.
Secretary: Fee, what kind of tofu do you eat? Me: what do you mean? Secretary: is it the white kind? Me: as far as I know they're all white Secretary: Oh I just can't get down with tofu, it's all flavorless Me: well okay

Tell 'em white tofu is supposed to be chicken, brown is supposed to be beef, pink is supposed to be salmon etc. Omnivores seem to think that tofu is supposed to imitate meat. You can't just eat tofu because you like tofu.

I love coconut milk for cooking things that are meant to be creamy and a bit sweet, but it's totally not a replacement for soy milk. I got on the coconut milk ice cream bandwagon for a little while but then I realized that the soy flavors all taste better. Now all the "holiday flavored" plant milks are coconut instead of soy, and...quite frankly, they're gross now. I want my soy back!
