They're using city buses.

I think the caterpillar buses would actually be worse. The limiting factor here isn't going to be how many buses they can run, but the rate at which they can load people onto the buses. The long buses take twice as much loading space with the same number of doors. Assuming they get 24,000 people in four hours at each of the choke points, which is a very conservative estimate, they need to load 100 people a minute onto the bus. It's not happening, but the more doors, the better.
At the ferry now. It's packed, but better than the bus line.

do they not have the option to have a cop at the rear door with a fair-taking machine to allow people to load from the rear door as well? (if not, that would be a good retrofit)

The buses are free today so collecting fares should not be an issue.

Dag, yo. I was the second-to-last person they let on a ferry tonight, out of approximately infinity people waiting in line. I have so much ferry privilege right now.

Acr gets 500 mumbles points, redeemable at participating retailers, subject to terms and conditions, not available where prohibited by law.

They were showing some of the pictures of the damage earlier. Just terrible. Some places were hit really, really bad.
The other day they were reporting that at least twelve people died, and I said I was afraid that number would rise. Now it's over eighty.

I am doing my duty as a person with no job and not leaving my neighborhood. I took a bus in my hood today cause I was carrying heavy stuff and it was not bad, but the traffic was nuts!

First thing I am going to do when we get power back is donate to relief agencies. Its just been 3 days since we lost power and I am lucky enough to have gas, a roof, food, water and friends with power who let me do laundry, charge phones etc. I cannot even imagine the hell it must be to be a refugee.
The lines for gas are crazy. I saw one with over 300 people in it. Its like 1979. Or the zombie apocaplyse.
I am so cold though, and tired. Apparently none of us sleep well when tired. Its Leela's birthday tomorrow and I alternate between being so happy she is healthy and sad that I can't make her cupcakes or celebrate leisurely at home. We're going to wake up, walk the dog and rush somewhere with heat to spend the day. I am going to do my best to focus on her and love her up.

Tofulish you and Leela and the baby daddy are more than welcome to come here to celebrate! I will make SO many cakes. Alternatively, since she's young enough to fall for trickery, her birthday could be postponed a week or two! Is that bad advice? Should I not have babies?

Apparently "everyone" told my husband to use the gas stove to heat our house. So its freezing and we are fighting, because I and Google think it is a huge CO risk.

What about the oven (or is it not gas)? I mean, if you were cooking soup for 5 hours is it any different than using burners to warm up the kitchen even without food on it?

The ferry this morning--pretty great. There was a short line when I got there, already loading onto the ferry. They were like, "Six more people!" when there were six people in front of me in line. I was all, "But...my ferry privilege?" Then the guy in front of me said to the lady at the gate "Can I ask you a question?" and she's like "OK YOU GO INSTEAD." The guy was all, "Thaaaaaaaat's fiiiiiiine." Ferry privilege status: intact.

I flew out of JFK last night. My flight was fortunately on time and the airport itself was incredibly desolate. I went through security in a couple of minutes. It was eerie.

I have nothing to add, since I live on the west coast, but I have been following the news and this thread closely.
Crazyness. I hope that everything turns out all right and goes back to (relative) normalcysoon. Although after seeing the pictures online, normal might never come back :( especially in those beach cities
And being without power for days on end is horrible, especially in the cold with children. Who's down for a trip to Orange County? I have an extra room, and a pool. It's gonna be hot this weekend. Pool party for everyone. Beer and hummus on me.
