if its covered in wax, its usually a rutabaga/swede. i think they are a bit milder than a turnip. less of that radishy bite.

Now I'm totally craving rutabaga. I like turnips too though! I like getting a rutabaga and a turnip and a parsnip and a sweet potato and chopping them all up and roasting them. Yum.

I call them turnips though I know that officially they are "rutabagas". Everyone calls them turnips here, unless we are speaking French and then they are naveau or navet.

I agree with whoever said to boil them for a long time then mash with marg, salt and pepper, with a spoonful of brown sugar. Delicious. Or add them to stews.

A rutabaga looks like a dirty, shriveled up, old turnip. Turnips are pretty.

Just for the record I think it's a rutabaga.

I haven't eaten many rutabagas, only when in the CSA box. They were okay. Turnips, on the other hand, can be quite delectable, especially when you get them young and not too large. Turnip greens are soooooo good. Love me some turnip greens, more than the root itself.

Its a Swede! - lovely mashed with lots of blackpepper and covered in gravy (the chickpea gravy from AFR would be my choice)

Turnips are white and taste vile - unless they are pickled in the middle eastern fashion, that seems to make them acceptable.

I've eaten fresh turnips only as a kinpira with curry powder and liked it. Turnips fermented in the same way as sauerkraut, saure rüben, are more popular than fresh here. Saure rüben are often used in jota stew instead of sauerkraut.

I like Swedes / rutabagas glazed with orange juice.

the yellow orange thing is a Swede. simple :)

BUT then the Scottish got involved with their calling one of them 'neeps' - But I think if the only people who do anything interesting with turnips are the middle eastern's and they pickle turnips - and turnips in this case being the white/pink vegetable then they should be followed.

I can't imagine pickled swede tasting nice, its too peppery... and wouldn't take on the pickled pink colour either

no idea what a rutabadga thing is tho...

I haven't seen very many turnip greens this year - mostly kale and collards at the produce stand.

My grandmother used to cook rutabagas when I was a kid and I hated them. I'm willing to try them again, just not sure where to start.
