The very first episode of Good Eats is on Hulu, and it's about tofu. While watching it, I realized that Alton and I put the accent on different parts of the word. So now I'm curious about the rest of you. Is it TO-fu or to-FU?

He does. He also says "soe-ee" instead of "soy."

TO-fu, but to-FU may slip out every now and then.

I kinda like toffu. I also like how (wow! I forget her username; she's our Copenhagen friend) says tofulish: toFUlish. I think it's a lot cuter than TOfulish.

I didn't realize until just now reading lutin's post that even though I pronounce the food TOfu, in my brain, I actually pronounce the name of the PPKer toFUlish.

I say TO-fu. I think the only person I've ever heard say to-FU is my hippie uncle who's been vegetarian forever (and Alton Brown, I guess.)

TOfu. But, yeah, ToFUlish... because it's a portmanteau of tofu and foolish. At least in my head it is.

I say to-FU, I think.
One time someone told me the way I said it was cute. And then my friend made fun of me for being weird, since apparently only 17% of the universe (according to this poll as of now) says it the way I do.

I feel like I don't put an emphasis on either... Maybe because it (either is or just sounds like?) a Japanese word, it makes me feel like it should be said without emphasis?

To-FU. I don't know if I've ever heard someone say TO-fu. Maybe it's a Canadian thing?

I voted TO-fu but I don't know that I pronounce it with any emphasis either... which doesn't make sense. Now my brain hurts

In my case the emphasis is slight, but definitely enough that it's noticeably not toFU.

I say TO-fu.

Apparently this is how we are supposed to say it in Japanese: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... b/Tofu.ogg

I don't feel like that's how I heard it in Japan, but then again, I didn't really understand anything in Japan.

This is how I say it, too. I also didn't know about different pronounciations.

Yeah, this. I don't think I pronounce it either way that's mentioned or even heard it said in those ways?

I'm pretty sure everybody (except toffu folks) says "toe" for "to" and "foo" for "fu" - the question is about syllable emphasis. So, TOE-foo or toe-FOO, if that makes sense.

man, now I've been sitting at my desk for a good minute saying tofu over and over again trying to figure out where I put the emphasis. And I have no clue. I think I say it approximately "toe-foo" like PP.

Yeah but I don't think I make any emphasis and I don't think I've ever heard someone do that.
