It looks like it did the day I bought it (ie. not speckled). I haven't opened it yet, so I don't know if the smell is off, but if the taste is off, won't it smell bad too?

Looks cool but didn't have what I was looking for on it. Does nutritional yeast go bad? I found a partially used canister in the way back of my fridge that is expired by 6 months. It looks fine and smells delicious still...

Mine was good 6 after its expiration date. I always keep nooch in the pantry. Is it supposed to be kept in the fridge? I can't keep everything in the fridge. It's too small even for perishables + sensitive nuts and seeds.

I keep nooch in the pantry also. So far, so good.

I really need to clean out my fridge, or I am going to be posting in this thread again soon.

Good to know about keeping the nooch in the pantry - I was sure I had read to put it in the fridge, but I checked out the bottle again and it doesn't say a word...

Just ate some soya yoghurt. Had had a few spoonfuls already when I noticed there was a massive green-black blob of mould in the tub. I feel disgusted :x

LOL I love that there is a thread for this! So heres my question..... Soaked almonds for almond milk, and left them for 15 hours, didnt change the water, overnight on my bench. Temp was probably about 15 degrees celcius in the kitchen. How long is too long when soaking almonds? Whats the worst that can happen, im sure (but not 100%) that these will still be ok to make almond milk out of?

15 hours doesn't sound like too long at all. That's basically just leaving them out all day. I think you'll be fine. Everything smells ok?

You can definitely soak almonds overnight (probably up to 24 hours, at least) at room temperature or cooler. The only problem might be in the summer or a warm spot you might get some fermentation going.

Ah cool! They smell fine, i broke one open, looked fine and tasted sweet. Im not in the habit of eating them after soaking but didnt taste strange at all. Its not very warm here at the moment, so sounds like it might be all good. Thanks!!

How long does nooch typically keep for? I put mine into a separate container and I don't remember the expiry date...but I've had it for a while! How do you know if it's gone bad?

I left 2 milks out this morning, a just-opened almond milk and a weekish old mint choc soy milk. They sat on my counter for about 9 hours. Toss?

I would drink them but my house is now coolish during the day ( 15C, 60F). I would toss them in the summer.

I boiled some chickpeas on Thursday, chilled them fast and put them in plastic bags, shut the bags and put them in the fridge. I don't doubt that they're fine to eat now, but I want to make hummus with them. A batch of hummus usually lasts at least four days here, so they'll be a week old. Will that be ok?

hmm, maybe it would be a good idea to boil the chickpeas for a few more minutes (5-10 minutes on rolling boil?) to kill the bacteria/fungi that are developing now or to freeze the hummus in small portions after you make it to stop them from growing.

I'm just amazed that you guys have nooch around long enough to fear it has gone bad!

I suspect nooch doesn't go bad. It's a completely dry and shelf stable item. I'm guessing it might loose some flavor or nutrients if it sat around for a very long time, but it doesn't seem like it would start breeding anything that could get you sick unless it got wet.

Nooch most certainly does go bad if it gets humid (as you specified). I kept it in our storage room in the old house (stupid moneybags me, on one trip up north i sprung for a 10# bag and thought it would last forever), one day i went out for a refill and it smelled like cat pee. Saddest day of my life.

I was cleaning out my fridge today in preparation for Xmas food and found an unopened can of coconut milk to make whipped cream. It's probably been in there for 2 months. But unopened cans are ok eh? It's just a no-no to store opened cans in the fridge?

it's a can, so it probably sat for way longer than that in the store. opened cans you have oxidation and also exposure to the bacteria/etc in the food itself. i'd use it.

Yea i was thinking its prob ok, just the fact that its cold wont do any damage to the can im guessing. I think they found cans of food in antarctica and they were still good years later! LOL

Big container of applesauce. Opened a few weeks ago. Maybe a month ago. I should have frozen it, but I got lazy and then forgot about it. Toss? I don't want to because it's nearly full! I only use it for baking.
