Hello!

I have a recipe up that calls for 1 16oz can of chickpeas. However, I am pretty sure that the contents of said can aren't actually 16 oz.

But maybe they are! Any chance anyone out there has a can o' chix they'd be willing to crack open and weigh and/or measure? It would help me in my quest to make dinner with dried, not canned, chix. I would be so grateful to you...

I think a can is just under 2 cups? since 8 oz = 1 cup, but you have to take out the liquid. i would say maybe 1 3/4 ish cups?

it's basically a cup and a half of cooked chickpeas. that 8oz thing doesn't apply to chickpeas.

I usually make a cup of the dried stuff up. When it is cooked I usually use a cup of the chickpeas for each tin on the recipe. Then I use whatever is left over for salads for my lunch.

Can I get a weight-ness? Anyone out there got a scale?

if the can says it's 16oz then it is. or very close. Do you need a weight of the chickpeas without the liquid? if so, you could measure it into a liquid measuring cup and the volume in fluid oz should be approximately the same weight in oz. then subtract that from 16.

Nevermind, i didn't realize you didn't actually have a can of chickpeas yourself.


ANYWAY, tell us the recipe you're using? that might help. or...just look up a conversion of volume from dried to cooked chickpeas and then measure. What recipe is it that this needs such chickpea precision?

The recipe itself is somewhat irrelevant... per the suggestions, I'm sure could just use about 1 1/2c. chickpeas and be fine. I just like accuracy and honestly, I wish recipes that called for cans of things included weight as well. No bigs if I can't get the data before dinner or nuthin', tho...

According to the internet. 1 cup of dried chickpeas equals 2 cups of cooked. So, if a 16oz can is 1.5 cups of chickpeas then you'd need 3/4 cup dried to make the equivalent of a 16oz can.

My can of TJ chickpeas says that the drained weight is 10 oz for a 15 oz can.

Also, I find that a can of chickpeas is a generous 1.5 cups. Less than 2 cups, but more than 1.5.

According to the nutrition info, it's 1.75 cups (3.5 servings of 1/2 cup each).

As someone that cooks with dried beans all the time, my general rule is 1/2c. dried = 1 1/2c. cooked = roughly 1 can of beans.
