This book just arrived. I'll do a proper review later, but even if I never cook anything from it, I will always love these words from the intro:

'This is not a health food book, nor do I make any health claims about a vegan diet. Any health benefits from these recipes are purely coincidental. You will not read the
phrase "supports the immune system", nor will I balance imaginary energy fields, attach fabricates properties to herbs and spices, invoke ludicrous homeopathis assertions or any other such mumbo jumbo'.

I bought this one too and read through it. I can't wait to get into it, I like everything about the book so far, especially the stories of his experience being vegetarian/vegan. Except that there are too few pictures and of the ones that are there, a few are duplicates! Everything looks delish though.

I finally caved! I love it so far. Some of the curries look really interesting/delicious, and I am enjoying reading the prose because it sounds honestly like an author's voice rather than what we typically get in a lot of cookbooks nowadays where the publishers try to streamline everything and recipe intros always include the word sumptuous, easy, special, delicious, warming, etc... This is just like "hey I wrote recipes and I'm excited about them and I'm going to tell you about them with honesty." I'm looking forward to trying a lot of the soups, and the savoury brussels sprouts look amazing.

I got this book a few weeks ago. As far as I can tell so far, the index is pretty good. There's an index by cuisine as well.

Things I've tried so far:

- Cabbage and Peas with Ginger: Excellent and easy to make. I had it with rice.

- Chana Masala with Chiles: Delicious as well. I didn't have any green chiles, so I subbed the mildest chiles I had (and only used 2 instead of 8, because I'm a bit of a wuss; the heat was perfect for me). I subbed lemon juice for the mango powder, because I didn't have any at the time.

- North African Flavored Pasta: I didn't purrée my bell peppers, just chopped them very small. I halved the preserved lemon, used less capers and left out the chiles - it was still pretty spicy! Next time I'd use even less preserved lemon, as I think it was a bit overpowering. It was still pretty good though!

Kale and Moong Bean Stew: Delicious! I used spinach instead of kale, though. ;) Anyway, this is my favourite recipe so far. I used 1.5 chilis and it wasn't spicy at all, so next time I'll use 2 or maybe 3 (the recipe says 2-4). I served it with naan (made from the recipe from Vegan Eats World).

I made the Ful Mudammas today and it was really, really good. I used pre-cooked beans (seasoned with cumin) so that I could reduce the cooking time. I let it simmer for about 45 minutes - the beans were soft but not entirely cooked down, just as I like it. I used less salt (3/4 tsp) than the recipe asked for. I don't often bother with garnishes, but I did include the cucumber and paprika and it was a nice addition. I'll definitely make this again!
