When I eat at dinner where there is communal food, I always make sure to serve myself first, to avoid cross-contamination.

Otherwise, you get the meaty gravy covered spoon stuck in the (vegan) potatoes.

Keep some leftovers for yourself in the kitchen too, like in the pots they were cooked in, so you can enjoy them later. Your the hostess, this will be easy to do.

I've found this to be the best option as well--otherwise, the cross-contamination gets crazy, and by the time I serve myself there won't be anything for me to eat!

Cross-contamination is the worst! I have a moderately severe peanut allergy so I've always got to be on the lookout for utensils that were used not only for meaty or creamy/cheesy dishes, but peanutty things as well.

Seriously, it drives me crazy! I have to watch my FIL like a hawk when he's cooking the roast potatoes at Christmas because otherwise that turkey grease covered spoon is gonna be all up in there!

I always make all the other veggies at Xmas because I cannot eat veggies that have been boiled to shiitake and Nick & I always make our own gravy and grab stuff like cranberry sauce before anyone else gets near it.

vegan or not, cross contamination of food has always bugged me personally.

I can't stand bits of food in other bits of food....until I put it on my plate and mush it altoghether :)
