I would have added to the thread, but was afraid it might get lost and this is, of course, a dire emergency.
The 500 Vegan Recipes potatoes au gratin calls for 1/4 cup of sesame oil. I've got toasted sesame oil. I don't want to use 1/4 cup given the price of that stuff, but should I use a few tablespoons for the flavor? I'm also afraid that the toasted will be too strong.
I'm having trouble even imagining how sesame oil will taste in the sauce, but I trust.
Thanks!

toasted is a LOT stronger, so I'd use a different oil and a slight amount of the toasted.

Gosh, honestly I would go less than a quarter of the toasted oil mixed in with regular oil. I have toasted seasame oil at home, and although I love it, I use it VERY sparingly since it can be overwhelming. I would do a couple of teaspoons probably. Especially since I think seasame oil in au gratin potatoes is a bit strange. I would think you would only want a hint of it in there.
I would let a couple of others weigh in as well, since everyones palate is different, but that is my opinion.

I was a tester for the book and I think I made that recipe with rapeseed (canola) oil instead. I had no sesame oil available. It came out fantastic. I also think toasted sesame oil will be too strong. I think other testers made the recipe as written (regular sesame oil) and liked it.

Yeah, toasted will definitely be too strong. i wouldn't use any of it! I haven't made the recipe, but toasted sesame oil makes everything taste like it and i think the flavor would be weird in au gratin potatoes.

Thanks. That's helpful--will go with canola then. I'm just as happy to board my sesame oil anyway!

Texture is nice and they are a comforting sort of dish, but very little flavor. I think they will be good with gravy though.

Could be! I'll get some plain sesame oil for the next time I make them.
Although, maybe they aren't supposed to have a lot of flavor anyway. These are one of the recipes where I bisque about no flavor, but eat it all and keep craving it, kind of like the sunflower Mac on Isa's blog.
