*exactly, but for GE crops we usually dont allow then generations to mutate as a new certified seed crop is planted each year. For conventional seed however we have far less safety assurance. Mutation breeding (aka atomic gardening), embryo rescue, hybridization, ect all cause mutations in thousands of genes, consequently conventional breeding has resulted in celery and potatoes that are poisonous. Conventionally breed crops are not subject to any safety monitoring at the molecular level unlike GE crops. The idea that conventional breeding is safer than GE is just false. GE tech is more predictable and is better regulated for safety.

No. The mutation rate will depend to some extent on where it is and the base composition (which will have been adjusted to resemble the host organism anyway). "Wasn't supposed to be there" isn't a physical property upon which mutation acts. These genes are doing just fine in other organisms, such as peppermint. Most mutations just break the protein anyway and this isn't really a scenario where you would have selection pressure driving changes in the protein.

and skeptical vegan, potatoes (and tomatoes, peppers and eggplant) are solanaceous. they're already related to highly poisonous plants (deadly nightshade/beladonna for one.) it's not surprising that conventional breeding would bring about a poisonous hybrid. (this is one of the main reasons macrobiotic folks stay away from solanaceae.)

I'm ok with eating GM food but I like having a choice. I just had a visitor from the US who said she doesn't buy tofu anymore because it's so hard to get non-GM soy for her. I wouldn't survive without tofu!

she can't find organic tofu? that's odd. most tofu around here is organic. (and therefore defaults to being non-GMO)

The only place I've seen tofu not marked as organic are the asian groceries. Everywhere else it seems to be marked as organic.

Yeah, I've never seen non-organic/non-GMO packaged tofu.

Didn't we have a thread where we were purposely trying to find GM tofu and all the major brands we were finding specifically stated either organic or non-GM? I don't think anyone found any.

I did that locally...went and found about 2 dozen or so brands and checked em all, all were non-gmo. I think people just get confused by the out of context statistics that activist throw around like "GM soy accounts for 91 percent of soybeans planted in the US"...well yes but only a small percent of that goes to making tofu of veggie burgers, most is animal feed and oil. Same for claims that "85 percent of U.S. corn is genetically engineered" without differentiating between field corn, sweet corn, and popcorn (there is no gmo popcorn).
