i've very cleverly timed my visit back to the US to coincide with my birthday next Friday so i have an excuse to hit up an awesome NYC restaurant. my mom told me that although she & my dad would love to take me to Candle 79, it's not in her budget with 6 people in our party. a little disappointing, but Mr Ketchup & i can eat there another time by ourselves.

any suggestions for other nice but less pricey places? i've done a few birthdays at Blossom, which i liked, but i don't know if that's any better for my parents. Angelica Kitchen isn't bad, but the fact that they don't take reservations or credit cards is a bit of a pain. how is Soy & Sake?

We took my mother-in-law to Soy and Sake, and it was both classy and tasty. Good variety within the pan-asian cuisine, but the sushi was my favorite. I think it would be ideal for a BD celebration. (PS they must have heard the complaints about the fish tank--no more fish).

someone was telling me about the mind-blowing brunches at M.O.B. last weekend--like, that they were good enough to win over people who didn't believe in vegan brunch. i'd never heard of the place before. he talked about dumplings or something, which didn't seem very brunchy. i want vegan french toast and a bucket of mimosas, damn it.
