Oh man. Today I wore some American Apparel stockings that previously stayed up fine (they have sticky plastic thingies) the one other time I wore them. Today, they both fell down dramatically in the grocery store and I looked like an idiot running out embarrassed.
Is there a stockings solution beyond garter belts? AA claims they stick to your thighs, but in this case, nope. I do have kind of scrawny legs, but still, not AA model-scrawny.
I love stockings and hope there is a solution beyond duct tape.

Can't you buy the kind that go up over your undies?

The only ones I've ever found that don't slide down are by Dim, but I'm not sure if they're available in North America or not. They're just great though, and don't move at all.

If you are talking about thigh-high stockings, the only ones I have ever had stay up were expensive. I find that the less expensive ones require a garter belt.

Thought this was about Christmas stockings...even after reading the op. Weird, although not unpleasant, mental images.

And seriously, this was so embarrassing. I live in a neighbourhood with lots of old ladies and they all stared at me aghast. Also it was freezing.

Oh no....this happened to a girl in a local band at a performance. On stage. One just fell down. I felt horribly embarassed for her!
I've never found a pair that didn't give my thighs muffin tops!

I've never found a pair that didn't give my thighs muffin tops! Oh yes, that is why I am about garters all the way! But for those souls with less generous thighs I imagine self-supporting stockings would be pretty neat.

I've never found a pair that didn't slide down. If you don't want a garter belt, maybe ladies' sock garters would help? These or these from Sock Dreams are cute. I've been meaning to buy some because I have some thigh high socks and stockings I really want to wear.

I buy thigh highs from Kohl's or whatever. Just some standard issue ones with a lace tape and several rows of the rubber stuff. The rubber gets good traction on my skin (though it's important to have shaved relatively recently--if I have too much downy hair going on where I'm trying to get the stockings to stay, it'll end badly). I have moderately endowed thighs, so I think that helps too, though, so I'm not sure how they'd work on slimmer folk.
Either way, I freaking love thigh highs. They are pretty much the best. I hate over the undies stockings because they give me muffin top and often squeeze my uterus in an uncomfortable way that leggings and pants don't. I don't understand this weird phenomenon, but it makes me sad.
Also, I too thought of Christmas stockings first, though that went away after I read the post. Then it came back when I read Fee's post, and it made me happy.

It's been a few years since I've worn them, but the target ones used to stay up really well for me. Much better than nicer ones I had tried.

I have several pairs from victoria's secret that stay up without a garter. It might depend on sizing/how tall you are/etc as well because I've never had a pair fall down.

It's really not that cold where I live! The worst days have been about 5-7 Celsius.

Years ago I was walking to school in a pair of seamed stockings, they started to fall down but with some discrete-ish tugging and pulling I managed to keep them up until I got into school at which point I realised my seams had done complete 360 degree spirals round my legs. Very classy. vijita wrote: American Apparel stockings that previously stayed up fine I buy really cheap stockings because I've found that they have a fairly limited lifespan, they stay up fine at first but whether they're expensive or cheap the sticky, rubbery band always stops being sticky after a few wears/washes (for me at least). Either way I find they stay up best on hairless legs, which have no moisturiser on but also aren't too dry. I have a couple of friends who swear by either putting them on when their legs are damp out of the shower or wetting the rubbery bit before putting them on. And I once knew someone who hairsprayed her legs after putting her stockings on, though that sounds like a fairly terrible idea to me.

I just bought these sock garters: http://www.sockdreams.com/products/acce ... ters:11234I wear a lot of layers in the winter and got some over-the-knee socks for myself last year and had the same problem. Those have two snaps so they're semi-adjustable. They also sell sock glue. I've never successfully worn thigh highs without them falling down.

Oooh, those are cute! Do they work?
I don't shave my legs and am not planning on starting, but I have really fine and sparse leg hair so it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

They worked great for the thicker socks I was wearing yesterday: http://www.sockdreams.com/products/drea ... tubes:3747 (P.S. those are the slam and if you are going to order from Sock Dreams, snatch up a pair.) But today the right one keeps sliding down under my knee and I don't know why. I also ordered this, I like it because it's a garter belt that isn't trying to be sexy so I don't have to worry about it matching my Hanes Her Way. It might be better for the socks i'm wearing today since they're technically thigh highs instead of just over-the-knee. http://www.sockdreams.com/products/acce ... -belt:6615I should also note that I measured all of my necessary leg parts when I ordered everything to make sure I fell into their suggested size range, Sock Dreams has a ton of people try on each of their products to see how they fit on a variety of heights, weights, and calf sizes.

I <3 sock dreams.
side note- double stick tape (like artist grade shiitake) works in a pinch to keep up thigh highs.

The American Apparel cotton and polyester thigh highs stay up awesomely well.
My biggest problem with sock garters and garter belts is that often the reason I opt for thigh highs instead of tights is because I want to wear something thin or form-fitting, so I don't want the sausage-casing effect that tights' waists cause. But all the garter belts I have (and sock garters I've seen) cause that effect anyway. So I guess it comes down to picking where I want my clothing-induced lumps instead of whether I want them...
