I call it Christmas, and I'm Buddhist. When I first converted I said I would stop celebrating it altogether, no replacement, but it was really important to my family that I celebrate with them.

I figure, it was never really about Jesus to them, not really. Mom goes to church on Christmas Eve and thats it. To me, its cultural, not religious. That might peas off religious conservative Christians, but screw it, I'm reclaiming it for Buddhists. They stole it from the pagans so I'm returning the favor XD So I don't mind calling it Christmas, it is what it is. A rose by any other name and whatnot.

My friends who are Jewish and Atheist don't stress out about this. They celebrate Hanukkah, don't believe in God and move the hell on.
What point is really being made if you celebrate a holiday just like Christmas, at the same time as Christmas, with all the essential swag of Christmas but we call it forking broccoli day?

None.

I'm gonna call it Vantine Day. I will sculpt a miniature you out of papier mache, add some wee butterfly wings and place wee Vantine atop a head of broccoli beside the tv. Maybe throw some glitter around for good measure. Then I will sing folksongs about the Wee Toby and pandacookie and finish the day off with a monster tea-party. Extra tots for all*.

*tots not included, please provide tots.

Sigging for my special End of Year Holiday* sig.

I've heard Newton was born on December 25th, so you could celebrate Newton's birthday. Or, you could just call it December 25th. Personally, I really like Giftmas, cause that says it like it is.
For me, it's all about getting past the December 25th annoyances as quickly as possible and getting to the fabulous party I throw on December 31st. There is a pretty big non-religious holiday on that day.
And good for you for planing on raising little non-believers. The world needs more parents like you!

My family is atheist, but we have a hard time calling it anything other than Christmas. Since everyone gets time off for "Christmas break" we just ask eachother "are you coming home for Christmas?" None of us give a flying fork about the holiday other than we get to see eachother.

I think the only reason my dad gave us presents to begin with was so we wouldn't feel like crepe going back to school empty handed. Now we barely give presents to eachother and we are all aware that the holiday is just a family excuse for us to see eachother. The whole country shuts down, so we go with the flow. It's actually a really lovely time for us.

I hope you find something that works for you!

Christmas IS an old pagan celebration. The pagans celebrated the solstice and the re-birth of the nature a long time before the christian missionars "declared" it to baby Jesus birthday.
Even today there are so much pagan elements in traditional Christmas ( imps, Santa Claus who ressembles the old pagan god Cerunnos, in Germany we have "Frau Holle" -mother Earth, even the christmas trees and mistel toes are a very old custom and have nothing to do with Christianity). Even the name in the nordic countries "Yule" isn't from christian origin:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yule

Relax and enjoy. Let them christians celebrate with us pagans.

Good, I can print that out and read it to my forking family when they criticize me for being an atheist who celebrates Christmas. I just like material possessions and the smell of pine, sue me.

Why does there need to be a point? I'm not even remotely offended by the word christmas. I just don't want to call it that.

I'm super relaxed. I'm so relaxed, I'm listening to 'Relax' by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Also I'm not pagan.

Okay, I have some other ideas. I was thinking about the Star Wars themed holiday, which would be great, but really I am more of a Star Trek fan. (I love both, but if I had to pick, you know...) There are two Klingon Holidays which don't seem to have a date attached to them:
Day of Honor
Kot'Baval Festival
But there is also this day, which though it is supposed to be celebrated June 16th, it would be really really fun to celebrate this...
Captain Picard Day

I decorate a tree, play dreidel, and make paper snowflakes. I don't celebrate any religion. I don't really call it anything. I just do it.

How can their not be latkes? and cocoa. there must be cocoa.

We aren't doing christmas this year. I'm not athiest - I believe in G-d but I don't believe Jesus is the reason for the season. I don't even believe he is Jesus but thats a whole other topic. We will still do gifts but it feels kind of lame and traditionless without all the trimmings - the tree etc.

eta - gifts aren't done until sometime after christmas / new years whenever my daughter comes up to visit.

Second Halloween.

But I would be pretty happy if all holidays were fancy-dress parties of debauchery laced with trappings of the occult.

Okay, well, I call it 'Christmas' for the church season, because I still live at home with my father, who is a priest, so basically nobody sleeps or breathes for all the panic and running around and sermon-writing and pageant-performing and crafts-bazaaring and soup-kitchen-banqueting and whatnot.

New Years' is always better, though, because nobody has any prescribed rituals except sitting around chatting and goofing off and drinking sparkly beverages. Which kind of turns into a half-arsed fancy-dress party of debauchery laced with trappings of the occult, if I'm around.

I celebrate Gravitas, which involves stringing up brunt out lights and hanging apples from the ceiling. Then everyone goes Lewis Carrolling. Questions are asked of children about science by people dressed as famous scientists; if they get it right they receive an appropriate present (microscope, slide rule, a pound of plutonium, whatever). If they get it wrong they get kicked in the teeth.

Have a doleful Gravitas, everybody.

i'm a third-generation athiest (my grandparents are SUPER anti-religion), but my family always celebrated what my (religious) best friend referred to as "the athiest family christmas." my hippie aunt always wrote "happy solstice!" on everyone's cards, but the rest of us never worried about giving it a name. it wasn't also very rarely on december 25, but just whatever day in late december happened to be good for the whole family to get together.
