Dear Ms M
Thank you for contacting the Co-operative Careline regarding jam and custard doughnuts, and I apologise for the delay in replying to you.
I have spoken to our Labelling team who have advised me that the recipe for custard and jam doughnuts are suitable for vegans, however as the products are baked and packaged in store, we have made the decision to not add 'suitable for vegetarians and vegans' on to the stickers, as there is a risk that the product could be contaminated in store with other products containing milk, egg etc. This is the case for all bakery lines sold loose that have been prepared in store.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact us, and if I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me directly on 0800 0686 727 Yours sincerely

hooray! still annoyed that they subscribe to the "milk traces = not vegan" philosophy -- if it's not marked as suitable for vegans, how will we know if they change the recipe to use animal products?

I went looking for them today in my big branch of Co-op but they didn't have any. I'll check the small branch tomorrow.

I'd nearly book a flight to the UK so I can get some in support!

South East. So not within driving distance of a co-op.
I will probably be over in the UK visiting some friends sometime in 2013 so doughnuts will be top of my list.

The only thing about Co Op doughnuts is I don't think they're nearly as nice as some other doughnuts, to the point where I would rarely bother. When I was first vegan, since these were vegan I got it into my stupid head all supermarket doughnuts would be, and ate Sainsbury's ones a few times. They were so much better, they've ruined it for me! :(

I sometimes get like that with new vegan discoveries. I kept getting the Aldi/Jus rol croissants and convinced myself I liked them, but they're really nothing like actual croissants at all and not even very nice.

I swear Co-op doughnuts used to be amazing (including when I was omni). Maybe they changed them or maybe I was just extremely easy to please, doughnut-wise, for a while. I don't eat many doughnuts so maybe it was the latter.
Now they do make me sad and disappointed.

Yeah, I've always found Co-op donuts are for donut emergencies - they take care of an intense craving, but they're actually not that good. I mean, I grew up on US donuts, and even the worst of those tend to be nicer than Co-op donuts. Damn, now I wanna make cream-filled donuts.

I don't think they usually cook them long enough or put enough sugar on them, but occasionally I get lucky.

They taste like regular supermarket donuts to me. We ate two packets between three of us last week.
