Officially rejoining this thread in the new year! I re-enrolled in my Masters yesterday, after having to defer it this year because work got crazy. I also transferred from the generic Masters course (in international development) to the specialised gender and development version. Excited!

Awesome. I just timed my giant presentation at 21 minutes. It will surely be faster than that on Friday ... Surely. Also, despite the fact that I could have done more this year, I am pleased with the amount of stuff I have done: corpus collection and annotation; round 1 of inter-rater stuff; rounds 2-3 of inter-rater stuff in process; 3 weighty side projects completed and 2 tangential experiments currently in data collection phases. Also, 1 complete journal submission, 2 special issue proposals, and ....6 papers that I have to write based on current stuff, all due by May next year.

Also done: lots of copy editing for the grad school's newsletter, bureaucratic bullshiitake for the PhD council, 5 conference presentations, 4 workshop presentations and other stuff I'm probably forgetting. The big things on my plate at the moment are getting rounds 2-3 of inter-rater stuff done, finishing my own annotations [4 sets to go] and planning experiments. Oof!

You rock lutin! That's an awe-inspiring amount of stuff you got done :-)

I'm pretty pleased with it, especially since I now feel justified when I go "man, I'm pooped!".

You definitely are justified. After your presentation on Friday, go enjoy some early holiday relaxation.

I have a big paper due in 24 hours, and that's it for the term (besides endless thesis editing). I've been working on the paper very half-heartedly all week and my motivation has gone completely put the window. Ugh, I want to be finished so badly, but I also want to sleep...

Master's thesis passed!!! And now I'm pretty much done for a little while! Good luck to everyone still in the thick of it, hope you have great celebrations to look forward to.

I have my second out of three exams at 5:30 and have been studying for it non-stop since 9 a.m. This is the exam I am expecting to be most difficult-- the midterm in this class handed me my asparagus. But I feel surprisingly confident with the material and as long as I don't encounter EXAM PANIC when I actually get the sheet, then I am hopeful I will be okay.

Also it's an open book exam and I'm taking 2 seriously bookmarked textbooks, 2 notebooks, 16 printed out presentations (because he's doing one question from each group's presentations), and about 20 different example problems I worked through this morning. I feel like a monster. Wish me well!

Samesies. At this point I just want to fill then remaining pages with "Allworkandnoplaymakesjackadullboy" and be done with it.

I wrote 40 pages in the last 3 days, but my semester is done! Good luck to everyone who still has exams, papers, and/or presentations.

Does anybody else get that end of the semester "thank god i'm done and now i am both exhausted and excited" feeling?

Finished a really annoying biostats take home final. I have no idea how I did, but it's done!

One more test tomorrow morning (that doesn't count... it's just a diagnostic test to help us study for our boards) and then I'll be 37.5% done with my MD! Now if I could just get rid of the pulsatile tinnitus in my right ear and bring my kitty home from the vet, I'll be a super happy camper.

Whoo-hoo! Congratulations!I do, but it will have to wait until after I submit this paper tomorrow, deal with my freshmen's final essays, and submit their grades. After that: experimental cocktail, cooking, and baking time!!! (Well, for a few weeks, anyway!)

Is there a standard for how many words should be on a page in the US? I only ask because my papers are all '4000 words, excluding footnotes and refs, etc.' (I'm studying in the UK and did undergrad + other postgrad in NZ, where it was also a word count.)

I'm officially on winter break now, but most of our papers are due at the end of the break on Jan 15th - so much for a psychological break from feeling as if I should be reading/writing/doing something school related. My final paper is due on Jan 25th and the spring semester starts on Jan 28th.

ETA - congrats, people who are done!

I think it's something like 500 words per page - if the page is double spaced and in a normal sized font... however most of the papers I have ever been assigned are for a certain number of pages, for example 8 - 10.

Done with 25 page seminar paper... time to grade 40+ student papers. Onward!

Post Semester Stress Syndrome: Nightmares about forgetting to turn in major papers or being unprepared for major exams. Moments of panic when you think you have to be studying when you do not.

I think I am also having Semester Withdrawals.

Got an email today that my prof hasn't received the case study I turned in almost a week ago. GAAAAHHHHHHH! I took it to campus MYSELF last Thursday.

HA! Just today, I was out for a walk with my BF, and suddenly erupted: "Oh my god; I can actually read that new Zadie Smith novel now!" It's like I keep getting freshly struck by the fact that my papers are written and submitted. (Of course, I still have to grade freshman papers and finish compiling my comps lists this week, but O, the headiness of not having to write anything for a little while!)

One more exam in just under an hour, and then I'm done for the semester. This would be better if I hadn't developed a stunning headache last night that has persisted into today. But I actually made myself study for this exam every night for the past week, which is incredible because it is the dullest class ever (yet also a core class that I had to take for my program), and unless the exam is totally out of left field, I should be okay.

Hi all! I'm not a graduate student yet, but I've started the slightly overwhelming process of looking into schools and studying for my GREs and I was hoping some of you would be kind enough to give me advice.

How did you study for your GREs? Is it really worth it to take a class or should I be ok on my own? Most schools claim they aren't a huge deal - do you feel like that's consistent with your experience?

I've been to a graduate school fair and started looking into other programs on my own. I plan to get an MPH, so I've been looking at the websites for schools with accredited programs and requested information from all of them that had programs I might be interested in. If I've had contact with any admissions officers, I've mostly asked about funding and how much debt their average student racks up. I'm coming from a nutrition background and I would like to have my RD even if I wouldn't be necessarily doing clinical work, so I've been asking if an RDI would count as the practicum experience most of the programs want for their second year. Is there anything else that might be useful to ask?

How many masters programs should I apply to? When I first applied to college, I applied to about 12 different schools, mainly because I didn't have my heart set on where I wanted to go and I wanted to have options. Is that a good strategy for grad school or would I be better off picking three or four programs and really focusing on getting into one of them?

You should be fine with a GRE prep book if you're pretty self directed in your studies.

If you're willing to move for school four doesn't sound like enough. I would aim for about six programs that you would be happy attending. Also, I would't expect to get much funding for an MPH. It's hard to come by funding at the Master's level, so if you're trying to keep expenses down you might want to look at in state schools. The other thing you might want to ask is how long the program will take. Some schools get you out in a year and a summer, others take a full two years.
