Where should me and my vegan friend eat dinner? I was not hugely enthused by Souley Vegan (sorry!). It's really the only Oakland place I ate at when I lived in SF.
I'll be in SF for sad circumstances after that, so my friend and I would like to catch up and eat some delicious food the night I fly in.

I dislike Souley Vegan as well...When I think back to my 2 times eating there I feel my stomach turn!
I know this sounds off but the Whole Foods in Oakland has the most amazing hot bar with vegan taquitos, Beyond Meat in green sauce and more. Also the pizza is decent and they usually (all the times I go) have vegan pizza by the slice. Also they have a vegan burrito on the menu in the same area. The coffee bar area has at least 4 vegan doughnuts at all times not to mention a cookie or two, free almond and soy milk on the bar...
If you are willing to go to Berkley I really love Nature's Express! Really good food!

I'll elaborate a bit. Encuentro or Flaco's. And maybe pastries at Timeless Coffee or soy fro-yo at the Tutti Frutti on Piedmont afterward (though all these places are pretty scattered).

Cha Ya on Shattuck is delicious, reasonably priced, and feels fancy enough without being super fancy. Plus they expanded recently so you can actually sit and eat without waiting for 45 minutes first!
If you want to stay closer to Oakland, I also recommend either Addis or Cafe Asmara, both on Telegraph, for Ethiopian food. Asmara is a few doors down from Scream sorbet, which has a really impressive vegan selection and some incredible flavors, and Addis has vegan baklava.
ETA vital dessert info.

Gah! Why is nothing open on a Monday? New question: suggestions for places open on Mondays? So far Flacos, Encuentro, and both Ethiopian places are out. :(
ETA, never mind. Addis is open! Hurray!

ha! Addis basically makes it into my list because they are the only restaurant I like to frequent that's open on Mondays. I can't tell you how many times I've thought to myself "hmm, maybe I'll eat out tonight!" only to realize it's a Monday. Hope you enjoyed it!!

We ended up going to Ensarro because it was around the corner from my friend's apartment. It was really delicious! http://www.enssaro.com/

You guys are amazing. I was getting after work dinner and drinks with a friend yesterday and, since she just started working in Oakland/living in Berkeley and I basically go straight home after work, neither of us knew where to go. I came here and perused this thread.
We decided on Encuentro and OH MAN. That was AMAZING. We had to repeatedly pause in conversation to just savor the food and murmur sweet nothings to our plates and make orgasmic noises.
Seriously. SO GOOD. I am going back as soon as possible. Thank you for sharing that tidbit!
