How does everyone pronounce seitan?
Sometimes I find myself saying say-tan and sometimes I say it the other way SAY-tahn. I find pronouncing it say-tahn sounds more better than say-tan.

I've usually heard ['seɪtæn]. The other day I heard someone say ['sitən], but he was clearly confused.

say-tan but with the emphasis on the "tan" so it doesn't sound like "satan."

I have to say, i never do get it when people post the pronounciation stuff in that way. Perhaps it gets taught as regular in American schools and, in which case, fair enough! Otherwise, I find this weird dictionary-speak stuff comes up every so often on ppk 'speech' threads and it annoys the ever-loving crepe out of me as i've no idea what's going on. Anyhoo. Say-tun.

say-tan, light emphasis on the second syllable.
The only time I've heard anyone say say-tahn was at some fancy NYC restaurant... Candle 79 or Blossom, I can't remember which.

I just find it... interesting.... that hdog gets a bit (rightfully!) het up about language threads and class and whatchumacallits and then comes out with this singularly exclusionist guffiness.

i think people who are afraid of offending others are careful to say an equally stressed "say-tan" (like a tanning salon tan).
i say it satan. with my wonky new jersey flapping t, even.

I pronounce it the way I pronounce "satan", and it's more like ['seɪtan]. Here we are taught international phonetic alphabet in English classes. That's the only way we can be sure how to pronounce something. I often don't get the other ways you try to explain pronunciation of something.

It is International Phonetic Alphabet, not commonly taught in US schools, but it is useful because it's standardized. So even if someone sees it and doesn't immediately know what the sounds represent, they can look it up and find the exact sound that's being described by it, rather than a transliterated approximation. The trade-off is that you either have to learn IPA or look it up, but the advantage is that it has the capability of distinguishing sounds that are similar but not exactly the same.

I think I say it differently every time. I remember being at Vida Vegan Con and pronouncing it satan and then fearing the wrath of all of the vegans around me.
