I'm turning 33 in 2013, so I'm thinking it would be fun to have a hobbity "coming of age"-party. I am short, love food and have hairy toes - it's pretty much a given. (I also read Lard of the Rings about once a year.)

So - what do vegan hobbits eat, when they're having a party?

Such a good idea! My partner is turning 33 this year and our family are big lotr fans, so we might have to do something like this for him.

Maybe you can get some food inspiration from the section of The Hobbit where the dwarves raid Bilbo's pantry? You could have multiple breakfasts. And of course the party at the start of LOTR should get you some ideas too. Can you have some small fireworks/crackers? I'd say lots of baked goods like cinnamon rolls, sweet quickbreads, cakes etc. And savory stuff like seitan roast, tempeh bacon and various luxury cheeses like those from Artisan Vegan Cheese. And you'd need to give gifts to your guests!

I didn't think of the Hobbit (not really a fan of that one) - will have to check it out! I just skimmed the description of the party in The Fellowship and they don't really describe the food except that there's a lot of it.
I think hearty food like a roast would be good. And plenty of mushrooms of course!

I'd want to keep it simple and rustic. A couple of loaves of artisan bread, some artisan cheeses (although honestly the Daiya jack wedge is really really good and I don't like the greasy Daiya shreds), a fruit platter, and then a really beautiful cake. Maybe some stuffed mushrooms or a seitan and potatoes hearty stew as well. Isa has a recipe for a stew on the ppk blog.

Great idea - I might have to steal it! Definitely think hearty and rustic: beer and cider, stuff involving bread, cheese, root vegetables and mushrooms, maybe a big pot of stew and/or savory pies, and something homey and fruity like apple crumble for dessert!

I think hobbits would definitely eat pasties.

Also, there are some German oat biscuits called Hobbits, which I'm pretty sure aren't vegan, but oat biscuits do seem like something hobbits would, in fact, eat.

I think Grog in giant gobblets would be fun! And 2nd breakfast. Desdemona's blog would also be a great place to look too.

I love gimlets *and* I can only drink ridiculously small amounts of alcohol - Gimlis are a perfect idea!

I was always very taken with the idea of "seed cake" from The Hobbit. I'm not 100% sure what it actually is, but...

It's true that I've posted a number of hobbit-friendly recipes over the years; shoot me an email or PM if you'd like specific recommendations for things that go over especially well with my furry-footed household!

Lembas aren't party food! My friends don't live near me though - I should send lembas with the invitations so they manage to get their asparagi over here.

Looks like it is a traditional British type of sweet quickbread with caraway seeds in it. Non-vegan recipe here: http://www.hobbitsecondbreakfast.com/hobbit-seedcake/

ETA: just found another nonveg recipe with multiple types of seeds: http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1932,15 ... 97,00.html
Sounds tasty!

Potatoes! Boil 'em, mash 'em, put 'em in a stew.

If you're turning 33, you need to drink a bottle of Rolling Rock. (There's a #33 on the bottle). I don't know if it's Hobbit-y, but according to Barnivore, it is vegan!

I love this idea! Definitely lots of baked goods, bread, fancy vegan cheeses, and root veggies. And I second the idea of a magnificent cake! With fanciful cake toppers! I saw in Martha Stewart Living magazine (don't judge, I love her) a cake topper that would be cool: long bamboo skewers with multicolored mini balloons (like water balloons) attached! You can stick them in at different heights, and I dunno, it just looked really festive. Sparklers would also be a great cake topper (though not in conjunction with the balloons, obvs, except maybe yes! Can you imagine how much noise that would make?!).

Also, lots of ale in big beer steins.

All I can say is that I love everyone who has responded to this thread. And I second the suggestions for taters (boil 'em, mash 'em, put 'em in a stew!).

You should invite Gandalf to set off some of those fireworks he's so well known for.

Dude, you HAVE to do lots of mushrooms! They talk a LOT about how hobbits love mushrooms in LOTR. Potatoes too.

Also, I got the impression that hobbits were rather british-y....so lots of cakes and stuff like that.

I just did an internet search for "what do hobbits eat" and got a surprising amount of results. I was pretty much on the money! I love those books and movies :) The mushroom thing always stuck with me. I love shrooms too!
