I came in here to say The Orphan Master's Son. Do they have to be books that came out this year? I didn't read many new books, but I liked Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon. The Road and The Book Thief would round out my list if it's just books we happened to read this year, though.

Just three separate, actual books you read in 2012.

The Left Hand Of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin All Quiet On The Western Front by Erich Remarque Beloved by Toni Morrisson
Its hard to choose. I read a lot of nonfiction that was good, but its hard to quantify what information I learned was better than other information I learned, so I'll stick to novels.

For various reasons I haven't read nearly as much this year as I normally do, but my favourites were: The Stranger's Child by Alan Hollinghurst American Caesars by Nigel Hamilton The Minotaur by Barbara Vine

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver And I'm breaking the rules because I read several series of books and can't pick a favorite from each series. So the Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin and the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson.

Shy Mox, I love me some Ursula Leguin. In that same vein, this year I finally read Octavia Butler's Xenogenisis trilogy. Older, but so good.

I'm embarrassed by how little I read this year. Im thinking of trying to finish something I started before midnight just so I can add one more to the grand total.

Extrememely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer i read this maybe a year or so ago and i think it scarred me. the image of the little boy thinking his dad was a jumper just got me everytime. amazingly well written though.

It was a good year for reading for me, I wanted to read 52 books & I read 62, so narrowing it down to three was really hard.
River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze - Peter Hessler Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power & a World Without Rape - Jaclyn Friedman & Jessica Valenti Arrival City - Doug Sanders
Nebraskalaska Middlesex almost made it into my top three too & your post reminded me that I've been on the waiting list for Nothing To Envy at the library since January! I may just give in & buy it.

The best book I read this year was, hands down, Buffy: The Making of A Slayer.

(Speaking of whom, not really, have you read Huntford's The Last Place on Earth, about Amundsen and Scott?)
