It's a new year! Post what you're hoping to achieve this year. And then post when you achieve it.

So for me:
I will have a job by the end of February.

I will pass my oral exams in May, and complete a full draft of my dissertation prospectus by January 1, 2014!

Done! Whew. Pups could not be reached for comment because they were asleep and snuggled against their will and now they're glaring at me. Maybe I'll slow down on the pup snuggles this year.

I'm going to watch 100 documentaries and read 40 books. I'm keeping a list, which I'll post on my blog at the end of the year. I have a bunch of other things I plan to do too, but those are the ones I'm really solidly committed to right now. My usual strategy for New Year's goals is to make a list of waaaaaaaaaaay more things than I could ever possibly do in a year, and then the last item on the list is "accomplish about 50% of the things on this list".

I have so many things that I want to accomplish this year.

I want to read more. I would love a book a week.

I want to make one blog post a week, and that will require one new project a week.

you're already braver than amelie! you walked right up to that crush and made something happen; no elaborate plots and disguises and birdseed arrows for you. still, your desire to face all the fears is commendable. i would also like to ask the wizard for some courage. but my more immediate goal is to keep the recycling from piling up in my kitchen.

I have decided! In 2013 I resolve to:

1. Avoid overcommitting: I will aim to study three subjects, run my nonprofit, work to support myself, spend time with my friends and family and fiancé and cats, and play quidditch. I am allowed to choose ONE extra commitment (at a time) on top of this - e.g. one new hobby or one extra class.

2. Read for pleasure every day, and finish 2013 having read at least 24 new books.

3. Finish translating the International Quidditch Association rulebook into Indonesian.

4. Have faith and patience through another year's separation from the fiancé. Say something loving to him every day, and make sure we both have our needs known.

5. Choose a reasonable goal for how many hours to study each week, and reach it more weeks than not.

6. Wash the dishes at least once every 48 hours (when I'm at home).

this year I am going to
-put together a conceptually coherent thesis exhibition of my own work, and write a 20page paper to go along with it.
-acquire a degree with my name written on it (in may!)
-either get in to grad school or
-move for fun
-both ways I'm going to end up living somewhere I've never lived before.

-these aren't even things I'm resolved to do, they're just things that are happening because my life is actually pretty wonderful and filled with so many possible directions to travel and live and learn and make stuff so I'm actually just posting here because I am really excited about the coming year.

1. Get a routine together.
I've been so tired and disorganized over the last year so a routine and some forward planning would really help me out.

2. Move house.
When we moved to our current house it wasn't a good decision as the place has turned out to have damp and insects. We're going to move around April and make sure it's well-researched and considered.

3. Look after myself.
I get really upset and stressed about various things as I don't take time for myself, which has knock-on effects further down the line. I need to care better for myself mentally and physically.

4. Save money for traveling.
We've been planning a month in Japan for October 2014 but would also like to have a couple of long weekends in different parts of Europe before then. I haven't traveled anywhere since 2009 so it feels overdue.

5. Take less crepe off people.

Be a full-time vegan. I was vegan at home, but ate vegetarian with family, friends, co-workers and in restaurants. The Netherlands is not a very vegan friendly place yet. I really don't want to eat animal products anymore, so I finally got up the courage to ask for vegan food (or to bring my own if they can't make me something appropriate). The family and friends part seems to be going okay, but I'm already trembling for the four day German archaeology conference I want to attend in September.

Gather all the data I need for my PhD. That means 1500 more early medieval graves in my database before November 2013. That's an average of about 10 graves a day (not this day though).

Write a paper about my preliminary results.

I love this one! I really need to not beat myself up for having bad days, weeks or even months. As long as there are some/enough days when I get my work done, I'm okay!

I've got lots of changes going on this year. I'm moving to a new country. I'm buying a home for the first time ever. I'm giving up the job I've had for the past 15 years and will need to look for new work. I'm making a long-distance relationship into a short-distance relationship.

I'm determined to start some new habits along with these changes. I'm determined to keep the new place clutter free. I'm looking forward to a huge purge of unnecessary stuff in anticipation of the move.

I'm determined to really start looking for work within my degree field, instead of falling back into my familiar but easy comfort zone of customer service. (Obviously I'll work any job I can find in this economy, but I want to at least apply for jobs in my field rather than chickening out and going only for bookstore work.)

Oh, and try more stuff in the kitchen that intimidates me. (Like baking with yeast!)

I think that's enough on my fork for the moment.

My goals for 2013:
-Keep up my grades.
-Learn French. Part of this will be translating a french version of Disney's Aristocats in a book version I picked up in Paris this summer.
-Read more for fun - I'm going to aim for 12 books this year, including quite a few danish authors, Murakami, Marge Piercy and some Henry Miller.
-Go at least once a month to watch a piece of film art at the Cinematheque here. This includes loads of french films!
-Go to an art or history museum at least once a month.
-Go to more concerts. Especially jazz concerts.
-Travel. I would like to go back to Paris and visit my friend who lives there this summer, and hopefully me an my boyfriend will be able to travel to Turkey where his dad has a vacation apartment at some point. And of course, I am definitely going back to Berlin as soon as I can afford it!
-Get a job, so I don't have to be broke all of the time. This is also essential in order to aquire travel funds.
-Find out what I want to study, and if I want to apply for winter semester 2013 or wait until winter 2014. Right now I am caught between wanting to apply to design school, architecture school (both are under the academy of fine arts here), medical school or maybe art history as a bachelor and then modern cultures and cultural exchange at university?
-Keep working on the culture projects we were working on in the cultural ministry last year, even though our position in the ministry is uncertain. Hopefully achieve some results and knowledge we can share with relevant partners.
-Start exercising again - no specific goal, I just have a stressful year ahead of me and I know I feel a lot better when I exercise a little.
-Eat healthier. And by this I mean; more protein, less candy (as in: not eat something sugary in crazy amounts every day).

Sleep more - shooting for 7 hours a night
Move more - don't care what it is, yoga, dance, lifting, walking. Just have fun moving my body
Not dieting, yep. Eating what I want when I am hungry and stop stressing.
