joshua I think vegemite is way sweeter (and more insipid) than marmite! Although maybe they've changed the recipe? I haven't had actual marmite for years, I get Meridian natural yeast extract, but from what I remember it's pretty similar.

Stir it into spaghetti with some marge and nooch, then eat the whole pan by yourself.

I don't think vegemite is more insipid than marmite, more like the other way around? The people who've compared marmite to miso or soy sauce I think are right in saying that, because it does have a slight, kind of fermented, sweet taste. Vegemite on the other hand, is a bit stronger, saltier & has an underlying bitterness, which makes it sound horrible, but actually, I think it's nicer than marmite on toast. Even nicer, IMO, is promite, which is a vegetable extract rather than a yeast extract. It's less salty & bitter than vegemite, it's sweeter & has a more complex flavour than both marmite or vegemite. It contains Glycerol Monostrate & "added vitamins" but last I heard it was suitable for vegans. I also have a jar of AussieMite in the fridge, which kind of falls within the "meh" category along with marmite in terms of flavour, IMO, but it's vegan approved, which is nice.

A little tiny blob of marmite in welsh rarebit adds cheesiness. It's also nice made into a glaze to baste a seitan roast with (as well as using to season the seitan dough when you're making it from scratch). Great in the gravy when you're making a shepherd's pie too. "Cheesymite" rolls are a bakery staple here, & you could easily veganise them. Bread dough, spread with marmite (usually vegemite is used, but obviously marmite would be fine too) & sprinkled with grated cheeze, rolled up, sliced into individual scrolls & baked to cheezy, mitey perfection.

That's good to hear. I've had an unopened jar in my cupboard going on something like 3-4 years. Maybe this thread will inspire me to crack it open.

I feel like vegemite is comparable to hard liquor and marmite to a fine wine. Not being a fan of liquor, I'd use vegemite in cooking only, but marmite is perfect for toast.

I think if you're brought up with marmite then Vegemite tastes like stock-cubes. Not a fan. If you're brought up with Vegemite I imagine marmite tastes equally unappealing...

Are they both made by two shitty corporations such as Unilever and Kraft?

well, you use it for gravy already, that's what I like to do - but also I stir it into hearty veggie soups. Adds a certain depth really.

I don't know if it's fair to say no one cares. I think it's fair to say everyone makes up their own mind about where they draw the ethical line as consumers. As jogirl mentioned, Australian & NZ Marmite is owned by Sanitarium, which is a locally owned company specialising in health foods, owned by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. I'm not religious, & do not agree with everything the church teaches (such as their anti-gay stance), but I still buy Sanitarium products. Oh, boy. Is there where I get told I'm not a good enough vegan? Because I love that!

I went off Vegemite for a while because of Kraft, but I often come back to it in bursts. I still occasionally feel a little guilty for it, but I've noticed that I skip breakfast often without it (old habits, etc). I lump it similarly in with buying Coconut Bliss or Lara Bars.. at some point it's hard to be too perfect :(

I just saw this. I can get Marmite here that would be cheaper than you shipping it. If you can't get puffins or liquid smoke let me know and I can figure out what it would cost to ship you some.
