I've been devouring British mystery/cop shows on netflix lately.

here's what I've watched or am currently watching, but I know there are so many more. Does anyone have any favorites that I should also try to watch?

Sherlock (both new and old Jeremy Brett)
Marple (the newer series and some of the old ones)
Vera
Blue Murder
Murder in Suburbia
Prime Suspect
Poirot
Cracker
Luther
Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes (just started Ashes to Ashes! eek!)

Rosemary and Thyme. Sort of Marple-ish. It's two middle-aged ladies, one a botanist, solving crimes.

I like Lewis, although we always joke that Oxford must have the highest murder rate of like any city ever because it seems like no fewer than three people die in every episode. My dad watched a lot of Inspector Morse when I was a kid, so Lewis feels familiar even though it's a different show.

I've watched a few episodes of Foyle's War (usually with my dad, ha) and I like it but I haven't gotten super into it.

Love Prime Suspect, Poirot and all things Sherlock.

I've heard there's a big payoff at the end of Ashes to Ashes, as in they will explain everything that happened to Sam Tyler and Alex Drake. I can't wait.

oh yeah! i caught one ep of Wallander on PBS and I liked it. Although I have to say I was really confused about where they were supposed to be. I didn't think TV shows did that thing where everyone is British even though they are in Sweden thing anymore.

I was a bit confused the first time I saw it, too! (Even if people are supposed to be "foreign," they still have to sound British; it's even funnier when American films and TV adhere to this ancient maxim!)

Yes, my mom used to watch it. I think it was shown on PBS' Mystery in the US. Which reminds me - what about Cadfael (of which she was also a huge fan)? Derek Jacobi as a twelfth century monk solvin' crimes; what's not to like?

I love both Inspector Lynley and Inspector Lewis. Also, Wire in the Blood is pretty good.

Lynley and Wire in the blood are great, but might take some getting used to if you have read the books, because the producers take major liberties with the main characters.

Also good is Case Histories, adapted from Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie novels.

Watching British mysteries will be the first thing I do once we're set up with 21st century tvs.

I liked New Tricks which was about a female detective who was in charge of three old fogey retired police detectives who were back on the force to solve old cold cases. Surprisingly good characterization and back story lines of the old guys.

Wire in the Blood was great. I think you can still get Lewis on Hulu, which is the only 'tv' I watch nowadays. I'm getting tired of being a quasi-Luddite.

I was going to suggest Cracker but you've already got it. I think it's the best detective series ever!

Have a look at A Touch Of Frost, Inspector Morse and Taggart. Hetty Wainthropp Investigates is also good but more light-hearted and features a young Dominic Monaghan.

Midsomer Murders is good. Very cosy mystery.

This is probably my favorite show of all time. I recently watched all the episodes on Netflix (was so happy to see them there!) and couldn't stop talking about it to all of my friends, who did not get it.

Yes and the transmission was forever going out. Adorable fiesty ladies, not giving a shiitake about taking care of their car!

There's a new one coming out - DCI Banks - based on the Peter Robinson books, featuring DCI Alan Banks and Annie Cabbot. It's on WGBH in the Boston area, beginning 1/21.

Also Rebus - based on Ian Rankin's books. I <3 Rebus!
