Let's say you're, I dunno, 400 miles from your family in one direction, and 250 miles from home in the other. You're cruising along I-5 at 70 miles per hour. It's dark. There aren't any other cars on the road.

The best thing you could do is put on this music:

Or maybe this:

...as you speed through the dark.

I skipped though the video's, I think that this music would be too distracting for me while driving.

I like to hum this when I'm traveling long distances on the motorbike

I guess I'm always up for feeling lonely because that music sounds like the perfect soundtrack to my life solipsistnation.

Burial is pretty great. I usually end up listening to him in the middle of the night.

Check out Truant, too, and Archangel. And Gutted. And basically everything he's recorded. It sounds like 2 in the morning.

It's almost 1. I should go to bed. But keep posting music please! I've enjoyed everything I've listened to in this thread tonight. Sorry Eric, I couldn't listen to yours. I'll look it up later.

Not quite the same, but at work I sit here all alone and nobody talks to me. Very lonely. Also, I love to go on long hikes, but do not have friends that like to hike.

I really like to listen to podcasts to keep from getting lonely. I mean, I love music, but sometimes I want to talk or listen to someone. And considering I am engaged to a musician, and have a bangin system in our car and home that is going off all the time, podcasts are pretty refreshing.

Like the person above, I listen to a lot of podcasts when I walk around at night. This American Life is best after dark walking around a neighborhood that one is unfamiliar with.

I had already been listening to This American Life for like 3 hours. I love it, but I can only take a few at a time.

So the story is, I drove from near Salem Oregon back to Santa Cruz in two days, stopping to crash in Red Bluff on Saturday night. I left the kids and C&S there-- they'll be flying back in another week. It's a long drive with nobody to talk to, although it's actually a significantly shorter drive without a constant top-volume chorus of "FROSSY THE NOMAN!" from the back seat.

Anyway, for late-night mopery, I suggest the Low Light Mixes and A Strangely Isolated Place podcasts and mixes, and Ulrich Schnauss' records.

And while I like a bit of Sarah Vowell's narration, I wasn't able to listen to more than an hour of one of her audiobooks. Oof.

We did a marathon 17 hr drive from WA to San Jose last week, stopping overnight in Portland. Comedy podcasts saved us from resorting to making nonsensical noises at each other, which usually happens around hour 6. But when I'm driving on my own I prefer music. I'll definitely keep this thread bookmarked for my solo drive to Orange County in Feb!

Young Adult audiobooks! The Feed by M.T. Anderson and Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers are excellent choices. They aren't so complicated that they require a lot of focus, but they definitely will hold your interest.
