Seriously, people, keep me out of your drama. Many times when I get that it's genuinely nutty people who are being avoided or who have been outright told their case will not be taken but still call. I had one gentleman accuse of being "in cahoots" when the attorney he wanted to speak to was repeatedly not taking his calls. He began calling every 15 minutes and accusing me of being "in cahoots with the city" (ostensibly to poison/spy on/oppress him somehow) until I finally told him we would take out a restraining order against him if he continued to call. Not that you can get a restraining order for phone calls,* but he didn't appear to know that, because it worked. *unless, of course, you're in cahoots with the city.interrobang?! wrote: You do not mess with a Glasgow gran. maybe people in glasgow are "respectful" (or at least get out of the way) of their elders BECAUSE they act that way.
in america, elders are generally passive, and young'uns are either crassholes or completely oblivious. (elders might also be afraid of strongarming the young in fear of being pushed down themselves.)

here, getting in front of a granny with a shopping basket usually means (anatomically adjusted for me) an elbow to the boobies, or a basket in the boobies. if you get in front of a granny with a cart, your heels will get run over for sure.
the granny aggressiveness cracks me up because under brazilian law senior citizens, the disabled, pregnant, nursing mothers, and the obese all have priority and have to have their own, shorter lines [everywhere- buses, banks, stores, etc]. however, there is no priority shelf for these grannies, and woe be to you if you happen to be between one of them and the bag of sugar on the store shelf!!!

This is a new one. A woman was smoking and drinking alcohol in our library two times this week. I live in New York, so the smoking is definitely not legal.

Wow, awesome, this totally cool person called back today and said "you'll be hearing from me real soon, just like those children did today." Today was the day those 20 kids were gunned down in Connecticut.
I have no doubt this guy is all big talk and no action, so I have no doubts about my personal safety. But it disgusted to me to no end that he would use this horrific tragedy as some sort of threat to have his stupid, nonconsequential phone calls returned. I had the presence of mind to tell him "that's sick, never call here again." before hanging up, but of course now I'm thinking I want to turn his number over to the police and press charges for treats against my person. If he calls next week that's what I'll do. Again, I want to emphasize I feel no personal threat, just enormous and deep disgust that he would say something like that.

Holy crepe, Erika, that's awful. You would have totally been in your rights to turn his number over to the police. That's really creepy. Is there anyone at work who you can report this to so that there's a record of incidents in case he escalates this kind of behaviour?

I would report it. If he's making those kinds of threats to your firm, maybe he's making them to other people too, who might be more vulnerable.

I'm going to add another vote behind reporting it. Even if you personally don't feel threatened, it's a shitty thing to do, and I agree with dropscone - just because you don't feel threatened doesn't mean it's not threatening behaviour, or that someone else won't feel threatened.

I was prepared to let it go at one call- a lot of people I deal with are mentally ill and may not understand boundaries unless someone firmly gives them over, such as I did when I hung up.
However, he called back today with a lynching threat, so I made good on my word and called the cops. This guy was stupid enough to not block his caller ID, so I have his number and I have a pretty good idea of who he is- he has never given me his name but he is similar enough to a previous caller/client that I'm fairly certain it's the same guy. There is a police report number, we'll see how it plays out. If I don't hear from him again, I'll check with the cops to see if they got in touch and scared him straight; and if he does call again, I'll document and track down his address in the old client files and hand it over.

"He's very busy right now, he just started a triple-murder trial." "Triple murder, what does that mean?"
Now, I realize that there is a lot of legalese out there, and after almost two years in a law office there is still a library full of basic terms and concepts I don't understand. But wouldn't it just stand to reason that a triple-murder trial is one in which a defendant or defendants are facing charges of murdering three people?

No way, triple-murder definitely means the same person was killed three times. Like Rasputin. Except he was quintuple-murdered.

i'm pretty sure it's when you murder someone while standing on a square red carpet, so that it counts three times.

Where I work, the customer comes up to the register, which has an 'Order Here' sign on it, places their order, and pays. They get their drinks at the counter, we bring the food to them; this is probably how most coffee places that serve food work (at least the ones I've been to). Usually, someone comes to the counter and I'm up there as soon as possible if I'm not already. I usually greet whoever comes in, if they bother to look at me, and tell them I can take their order at the counter.
Today two people came in, sat down, and started having some sort of important conversation. Neither of these people ever even looked in my direction, so I left the counter and went to do other stuff. After about fifteen minutes of this important conversation, and their never once looking at or moving in the direction of the counter, the guy goes up to my boss (who is no where near the counter) and says, "I would like to get some drinks, I hope that's not going to put you out too much. Are you even open? Haw haw!" (apparently, his having walked through an unlocked door into a fully lit and moderately busy establishment was not sufficient confirmation of our status as open or closed ...) Then he went out to his car to get something. When he came back in, I said, from behind the counter, "I can take your order here whenever you are ready." He reacted with some mixture of confusion and shock, said his order at me, then walked off and re-joined his important conversation. As he was walking away, I was trying to ring him up, but he never looked at me again. We ended up taking his drinks to his table, since he was clearly too important to take them with him. When he came up to the counter again, I asked, "Are you ready to pay?" and he said, "Fine, how are you?"
It was so hard not to stab someone with a pencil.

We've had some really shitty calls lately. One was a person who wanted to give up their pit bulls and cats because they were moving. The staff member asked why the person couldn't take their pets with them, and they replied they were moving overseas. The staff member asked why, specifically, they couldn't take their pets overseas, and the caller said "There's all this paperwork you have to do." The staff member said she knew several people who had taken their pets with them when they moved overseas and would be glad to help the caller with the paperwork, and the caller said, "No. It's too much work. I need to get rid of them today." The staff member said that it would be very difficult to find a place that could take the animals on that short notice, especially pit bulls and elderly cats because they are very hard to adopt. She told the caller that there are 2 big shelters in the state that have to accept all animals brought to them, but because they get so many animals, they can't guarantee the animals won't be put to sleep for space reasons. The caller replied, "Oh well, we all got to die someday."
On a lighter note: We had an older woman show up to look at cats. As soon as she walked in the dorr, she pointed to the office cat and said, "I'll take that one." A volunteer explained that the office cat lives with us and was not up for adoption. She showed the woman into the cat room, and the woman pointed at a random cat in there and said she would take it. The volunteer explained that the cat already had one application on it, but the woman could fill out an app if she wanted. We didn't hear from the woman until she called back, demanding to be given a cat and screaming abuse at the person who had answered the phone. A couple of weeks later, she called back after hours and left a message. She said, "I went to your shelter to adopt a cat, but you people made it too difficult. It shouldn't be too difficult. I went somewhere else and they gave me a cat. So I just wanted you to know that now I have a nice big bushy pussy!"

Lady adopted a cat just so she could say that, probably.
