mrsbadmouth wrote: I've been meaning to post this, Leigh (raspberryswirl) contacted Natalie Dee about her new line of nail polish. I wasn't really surprised that she got the response she did, if you read Natalie's comics or follow her makeup blog you can probably sum up that she thinks veganism/cruelty-free is stupid. So it's technically vegan but i'd rather buy from someone who doesn't think i'm a moron. Quote: Hi, Leigh-
I updated the store to include a page with the ingredients: superblacklacquers.com/pages/ingredients
I don't animal test, and the facility that supplies my chemical ingredients isn't a laboratory, so they don't have the infrastructure to animal test. However, the individual MSDSs for individual ingredients almost certainly had to do some form of testing in order to compile the information required by OSHA and governmental agencies. Every ingredient in every cosmetic has to have toxicity information and information about dangers individual ingredients would have on the environment in the event of a spill or runoff from factories, and it is nearly impossible to establish those values without some form of testing. If you follow the supply chain, there is animal testing for every ingredient, even water and olive oil, although if was probably by a contracted lab that is unaffiliated with the cosmetic brand or their manufacturers, and the testing happened 20-30 years ago. So, no, I don't animal test, and neither does the company that supplies commodities for my products, but I am sure that some form of testing happened in the past 20-30 years to supply the information for the MSDS and establish that the ingredient is safe for human use.
Thanks for writing- ND
Wow. I had no idea she even made nail polish... why would she? I don't get the thought progression... "I write snarky comics for a living, but by night I make nail polish that is technically vegan, but there were traces of animal by-products in the tires used to transport me from my hospital when I was birthed 30 years ago, so I you might want to account for those. It was not a choice made directly by my manufacturers, but it was made for them by someone else down the line. There are many ways that you can't avoid animal by-products, so suck it up. Just so you know."

i don't think we've ever gotten a straight answer, actually. i think many of us assumed that it was vegan, but i'm not sure we've ever heard from the horse's mouth.

They used to be made by the same company as Color Club, so they were vegan, and might still be if it's that same company.

Ruby Wing is owned by Color Club, I haven't tried them because I'm just not that excited about color changing polish, but it should be good quality, my Color Club polishes are nice, go on smooth and dry well without bubbling or anything.

I've got Color Club on my want-to-try list ;)
And Mode Cosmetics have confirmed their polish is cruelty free & vegan.
My only issue is that while looking for their contact details I noticed they are owned by the same company that distributes Revlon here (they also own Australis). I'm a bit torn, but I want to keep supporting Australis and now Mode, so I thought I should mention it.

Could anyone give a quick idea of whether the brands listed on page 1 are still okay and vegan, to save me wading through pages 2-7? Thanks.
I saw a stall selling Mavala nail polish at a recent UK Vegan Fair but it might have been a mistake. (There were some non vegan companies there and maybe they hadn't researched things properly.)

I think page 1 is still up-to-date and would have been edited if any company had made major changes in regards to testing/ingredients. This thread is pretty quick to skim through or use the PPK search function to look for a particular brand :)

The only polishes I'm seeing on the list that are iffy are Claire's because I have seen some that may contain carmine (their magnetic polishes, and I was pissed because I ordered them online based on the ingredient list on the website which WAS vegan but when I got them the list on the bottle had possible carmine. Jerks.)
The other is Sinful Colors. The ingredients should still be vegan, but Sinful Colors are owned by Revlon who started selling in China where animal testing is required by law. So parent company issues. I don't know if SC is being sold in China itself, so it could be a similar situation to the OPI/Coty issue where the brand isn't tested, but money would go to a testing parent Co, or if SC is actually tested now. I try to avoid buying from companies owned by testers so I never bothered checking on SC current status once I heard Revlon was no longer cruelty free.

Is there some reason why Dior and Acquarella aren't on the list on page 1?

Dior are owned by LVMH who sell in China. Acquarella I'm not familiar with.

All Acquarella products are definitely vegan (including the remover, conditioner, and moisturizer): http://store.acquarellapolish.com/Acqua ... WQU5IE.htm
