I live in the North End and I can't ever smell molasses... we've tried on lots of hot, sunny days! I used to live pretty close to the location of the storage tank that busted. There are lots of Molasses Day parties scheduled over this week! Yay parties! Also, this is actually a really good book.... Dark Tide

Really, parties? I'm assuming you eat lots of things with molasses in it.

Really, parties? College town, so of course. I get that, mostly, and I understand "waves of molasses" sounds more entertaining than dangerous. It just seems really strange to me to have tragedies remembered with parties. Like, there are no 9/11 parties or anything that I'm aware of.

Maybe the fact that this happened 100 years ago makes it less . . . tragic? That's not quite what I'm trying to say, but, the wound isn't still open, if you know what I mean.

People in Boston will party for ANY reason. In this case, most of them thing of it as "a molasses flood" instead of a "molasses flood where people died". starrynight has it right, probably, it was long enough ago and not an intentional act, so it is easy to make it into a party. Interestingly, it is the burners I know throwing the parties, not the college kids (the college kids don't know about local history).

We must know several of the same people, because the 2 molasses flood parties I know about are also being held/attended by burner friends!

I didn't end up going to the parties, one was out far(ish) from the T and I had stuff planned during the others.
