Our dog, Three, died this morning. His cancer came back really aggressively and it was too progressed this time. We knew it was coming, but he seemed like his normal self until the day before yesterday. He didn't seem in pain, just really weak. The vet said we could wait until he seemed uncomfortable, and we were debating, but thought we had a few more days left. We woke up this morning to find he had passed away during the night. He was in his usual sleeping spot, against my husband's side of the bed. I'm glad he was able to be at home and it seemed peaceful. He was really afraid of strangers and vet's visits are really hard on him. We've had him since Shae's 3rd birthday (hence his name), so he was 11 years old. Shae is destroyed but handling it. He made him a little grave marker and buried him with a soccer ball, since they always played together. Silas doesn't really understand yet, but we've been talking about it. I can't decide if it's easier or harder to deal with this being sidetracked helping the kids through it. At least I have to force myself not to cry all day?

Oh Kelly, I'm so sorry. This hits close to home as I sit here with my own puffy, elderly Sheltie. I'm glad Three passed peacefully. Hugs to you and the whole family.

I am so sorry Kelly. Three Three was beautiful, and obviously a very well loved and cared for pup.
Cuddles is over 10 (rescued as an adult so we have no idea how old he really is), and if it were me, I wouldn't hold back the tears. I think modeling that grief is part of life and love and that if we lose someone we love its okay to be sad is not a bad lesson. But you're a way more experienced and awesome Mom than me.
You and your family are in our thoughts.

I am so sorry, Kelly! I think it's OK to cry, even if you're helping your kids through it. I mean, it makes you sad; he was a good dog, you miss him. It doesn't make you any less supportive or anything. Eating cookies is also an excellent idea. And lots of hugs.

losing a pet is horrible but it sounds like he went so peacefully with those he loved around him.
