I've often felt that the only solution was this and there's this whole "the athletes who don't get caught have the best chemists," sentiment, but I still can't get the SNL All Drug Olympics skit outta my mind. "Oh, my, he's ripped his arms off!"

Also, I've been investigating speed/world record time advances in men's 100 meters for my own reasons and the time in that race has only advanced by around one second in the last century which is a blink in time for a whole lotta wringing and wrangling.

How about mechanical and electronic aids?

I patiently await the first Cyborg Olympics.

Looks like I was wrong but I know there were a lot of concerns about this guy with prosthetic legs, looks like they did let him compete.

From what I was watching previously about him, it said he could easily outdo someone of similar ability otherwise.

^It was Oscar Pistorius (South Africa) and he competed in London 2012 just last month.

Yeah, I went to look for info but I know there was a lot of swirl, should he compete? Is it fair? etc, etc. I didn't know they actually let him.

^Oh, yeah, absolutely. Controversy swirled for years around whether his prosthetic legs were an advantage but he was finally allowed to compete in the London 2012 Olympics and did really well!

yeah! the only issue was that they were concerned that his legs would trip others, so they had him go last in the relay, where the runners would be more spaced out.

His prosthetic gave him an absolute advantage, according to most of the things I read, but never let facts get in the way of a feel good story

They did a special about him during the Olympics explaining why his legs don't give him an advantage over the other athletes.

Because he has no muscles, his legs can't store energy like a calf muscle can, and can't generate pushing force.

Yes, on NPR they explained that the studies that showed an advantage were flawed because they didn't account for the way that Pistorius runs (as sisterlegume says) and the way his body uses oxygen.

Maybe the thing I saw was from earlier years (my husband showed me a youtube video prior to the olympics) and it did sound like he wouldn't be able to compete.

^Yeah, for a long time the stance was that Pistorius wasn't allowed to compete.

granted, their reactions aren't based on a thorough critique of the case against armstrong, but they did make me curious about the reaction to his decision in the us. in europe there doesn't seem to be a sense of surprise. how has the news been greeted in the states?

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
I've been following cycling and triathlon since before Lance's cancer, but as time goes on it has gotten increasingly difficult to believe that he raced clean when all the competition he handily beat have been revealed as dopers. Failing a test is not the only way to get caught (Marion Jones) and most of the bigger names that have been caught did not fail a drug test. It is also important to remember that while Lance is the main target, USADA's case is actually against several people from the team, some who still work in pro cycling. Two staff members including Dr. Ferrari have already been sanctioned. When Johan Bruyneel faces arbitration later this fall, we may be in for a wild ride.

I am sad that his reputation being damaged may affect the positive work he has done, but cheaters should be caught.

I thought I'd revive this thread in light of his admission to doping and lying all these years on the Oprah show this week. Answer found.

So now the question is whether he is lying to O and wasn't just one doper among many but was actually the ringleader who threatened people who wouldn't use.
