BYE-o-pic, because it's short for bio(graphical)pic(ture). Not to be confused with "myopic" which is mye-OH-pick or mye-AH-pic.
non-seck-wih-toor.

I once watched an interview with Giselle (the model) and she was showing some lingerie. And I said ohhhh so it's not pronounced "lon-jer-ray" (with the French 'j' sound). Everyone I know, and store departments and tv ads etc say lon-jer-ray. But it's not, is it? And then I thought but if I pronounce it the correct way people will laugh and think I have it soooooo wrong. But Giselle, she'd know how to pronounce all manner of clothing, right?
When I was younger I ordered a 'strawberry dye-query". And my vegan friend used to talk about eating 'kwin-oh-a'. And when I was much younger I thought facsmile was "fassiml'.
How do you say kecap manis? I've always said ke-chup mahnis but a friend says ke-kup mahnis.

Les is not really like lay... you can hear it on this site: leo.org And it's the second Les on the site, not the first one. I always go to Leo when unsure how to pronounce words.

Giselle, if we mean Bundchen, is neither a native English nor French speaker though.... she grew up hearing "lon-jay-ri" in Brazil, which if I'm not mistaken is a big closer to the french. She said it her way, that's OK. As an American I think a native English speaker saying that in the US is a bit Snooty McMaven-ish [and i am definitely a maven fan]. We use foreign phrases in our own nationally specific ways, the same as we all mutate and abuse Chinese food in our own nationally specific ways.

That's why I say I think I pronounce some things weirdly (from an English viewpoint). I have trouble with chemical things in English. I know how to say them in Swedish, but it's not obvious to me how they'd be pronounced in English...

I'd say it's like lay but with a shorter vowel (or: like the E of "trek")

I don't think 'lay' is a perfect replacement for les but it is pretty close. The vowel sound is not quite as strong in les. There's a definite difference between the sound of les and le.

I had no idea there was any other way to say lingerie (lon-je-ray). But also, it matters to me not at all our loan words are pronounced in their original languages. Lingerie in French is now a different word than lingerie in English. We've had the word long enough that it's an English word with an English pronunciation now.

discussion of misled made me remember that I used to think that "supply" was sup-lee when I was a kid. It drove me crazy for the longest time.

dukka (that Ethiopian nutty seedy dippy stuff new at Trader Joe's. There is also a recipe in VEW.) Is it duck-a, so the first part sounds like a water bird, or duke-a so the first part sounds like the husband of a duchess, or something else?
bisteeya (Moroccan filo pie, also in VEW)
Ok, while I'm on a how-to-pronounce VEW recipes:
ful medames
and tonight I'll be making char siu seitan bao (Chinese steamed seitan bbq buns.)

Ok, while I'm on a how-to-pronounce VEW recipes: ful medames I'd say the first (also I think it's Egyptian). Ful is pronounced fool. Medames I'm never sure of. Especially since I've seen it spelled so many ways. I usually just say ful and call it tasty.

The wrong E country came out of my fingers, perhaps because I'm a bit more used to cooking Ethiopian foods than Egyptian foods?
