I don't know. They said to allow 2-3 days, but I don't know whether that includes weekend days or not.

Some rescues are volunteer run and just terrible at finding time to follow up on references etc as the people doing so have other jobs and your dog is now "safe" so others become a priority. Also sometimes your references may take a while to call the rescue back esp over a holiday weekend, esp if you give a vet reference.
Call the rescue tomorrow and ask if they need anything from you to process along the application bc you're excited to meet/bring the doggie home. Enthusiasm goes a long way :)
Good luck!

They've checked all my references, and the person from the rescue is coming today to do a home visit. I still haven't met the dog, but the home visit is the last step in the approval process.

I think that went pretty well. She looked around my apartment a little, talked to me for a bit, and then left. She said that the person who runs the rescue will get back to me.

I'm not going to adopt this dog. Her foster family thinks that she'll be better off with someone who's at home more than I am.

Aww. So basically they want someone who doesn't work?
I had this issue with bird rescues: I wasn't good enough for them. I didn't make enough money, wasn't home enough, hadnt lived in one place long enough, blah blah blah. One expected me to drive to W.V. Every weekend to volunteer for 2 months. (7 hr rt)

I applied for another dog today. It's a Jack Russell Terrier mix. (They don't know what the mix is, but I'd guess at least some Chihuahua.) There were some other people who applied for the same dog, so I don't know whether or not I'll be able to adopt him, but if I can't, then they'll put me on the list for other dogs that come in.

I've been having trouble getting approved to adopt from rescue organizations, either because I work or because I don't have enough experience taking care of a dog or my apartment is too small or various other reasons. There are a few more rescues and shelters that I can try, but what are some other ethical ways of getting a dog that I could try? (I have a friend who is a vet who said that there are plenty of dogs who would be fine with my apartment and work hours.)

Maybe there are ways you could convince shelters/rescues how serious you are about taking good care of a dog. If they're concerned you're not home enough, maybe you could promise* to schedule time with a dog walker on certain days when you aren't home, or certain days spent a doggie day care. When your lack of experience is an issue, you could promise* to take training classes with the dog. If apartment size is an issue, you could provide information about nearby areas where you plan to take your dog to run around (like a dog park) and demonstrate that you have time to actually do that on a regular basis (like writing out your planned schedule in a calendar or a daily/weekly planner).
*in some documented, they-get-to-take-the-dog-back-if-you-don't way

Thanks. I'll look into that. I already told them that my neighbor dog-sits, and that I could have her come over for a little while in the middle of the day on days when I work long hours. At one of the other shelters, they said that they usually get several applications for each dog, and pick the one that would be the best home for that dog, and it seems like there would pretty much always be somebody who's better than me.
