No Scottish accent here. Just a nasal Midwestern drawl... :)

I figured that :) I was just curious because that guy looked like he could be Scottish. I also wondered what they would do with a woman wearing a skirt but I guess the same thing. I definitely would be more uncomfortable with someone putting their hands under my skirt if I was wearing one.

Yes, it is the same thing if it is a woman wearing a skirt. And it is disgusting and humiliating.

I dredged up this thread to say that the body scanners with imaging are going away.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/19/us/ts ... .html?_r=0
Quote:
After years of complaints by passengers and members of Congress, the Transportation Security Administration said Friday that it would begin removing the controversial full-body scanners that produce revealing images of airline travelers beginning this summer.

It looks like they will still have scanning devices (safe? who knows?) but will use a cartoonish type avatar.

I found an article about it here:
http://www.bizjournals.com/boston/blog/ ... anner.html

When do they use the scanners? When I went across country last summer, I had to stop at 6 different airports and never had to use the scanners.

I've gotten scanned at about 50% of the flights I've been on. I mostly fly thru EWR and ATL

I stopped at ORD, PHL, ALB, PHX, OAK. So, I stopped at 5, not 6 different ones. But still.

For the first time in 2 years, they didn't ask me to use the scanner last month on my flight back from San Diego. I was shocked. I've never got scanned, I've always got patted down. So I'd say probably 11 out of 12 flights? Mostly Baltimore, Dulles and San Diego.

I don't think I've ever gotten a pat down, either. I just walked through a metal detector and they told me I was good to go.

I might not have been clear, basically I've been asked to go through a scanner approximately 11 times, I've refused so they patted me down. Up until this last flight from San Diego, I've seen them sending every body through the scanner for at least a year in the airports I've been at.

I always get a pat-down because I always travel with...
Spoiler: show
Juice. Because of insulin-dependent diabetes.

It's okay—according to their rules—to have such "medically necessary liquids," but they obviously resent it. They all act like I'm trying to get away with something. So they pat me down, check the stuff, and go through everything in my bags. A scan isn't enough for my carry-ons. This makes no sense to me at all. I'm carrying something their rules say is permissible, and their testing says is safe. So what's the problem? Are people carrying this more likely to carry bombs and weapons?

Studies* show that a majority of underwear and/or shoe bombers are insulin-dependent diabetics.* It's a fact* you're just going to have to live with.

People with juice are more likely to be terrorists, it is known.

Still doesn't explain why the presence of juice means they can't just run my bags through the machine. Even juice drinkers' bombs show up on the scanners.

I opted out for my very first time last month! ionising radiation is sad times. the guy was pretty condescending when I asked to opt out, and the pat-down guy was eerily robotic. 2.5 star experience.

I always opt out and I've had reasonable experiences. A couple of times the wait for the patter downer seemed super long, but that may just have been me feeling anxious. I usually mention I opt out due to cancer and they seem nice enough about it. The pat downs have been fine, but I always wear pants.

yarr, the mm wave ones don't bother me re: cancer, but I'm under strict instruction to avoid excess radiation, like the ionising radiation machines. which is okay as it seems the mm wave machines are becoming more popular internationally too

So I'm assuming it's weird that I've never had to go through a scanner, been asked to or had to endure a pat down?

The last time I flew (Amsterdam -> Toronto), I had to do both. I went through the scanner, and they also pulled me aside for the pat down. Not sure what they saw on the scanner that made them do that. Maybe my underwires? 'Cause the security agent was all over my boobs during the pat down. I mean, seriously up in my business. So yeah. That was fun.

Same thing when traveling with breastmilk. Full pat down and going through all the bags. I dunno if that was because I didn't want to put the milk in the xray, but it is allowed to ask them to hand inspect the milk bottles. Not sure how that would have worked if I was traveling with my baby. Trying to imagine spreading out my arms and somehow holding a baby - yeah, no.

Oh and I forgot to mention that they also never sent kids through the machines, possibly due to the child pornography laws. If a porn star can have their image handed around, imagine what would happen if someone handed around images of children.
