Okay, this is probably the most annoying post I will ever make but I am desperate! This song has been stuck in my head for two weeks now but I don't know who it's by or what it's called or enough lyrics to figure either of those pieces out (I know!).
Here is what I do know: I've heard it twice recently in stores (a Starbucks and an artsy boutique) which makes me think it's either new or old but popular amongst hipsters. It's sort of a folk-rock finger picking jam, by probably a dude (or more than one) but possibly a lady. It may have a father-son theme. The only words I know come at maybe the end of the bridge and are "something something across the waterrr".
If someone knows you will make my week. Probably my month. Possibly my year.

Ask 'em, ye daftie! I swear to scrod, if you don't I will phone every Bux in the Vancouver area.

I'm afraid to look the song up for fear it'll get stuck in my head like it has for j-dub.

Any chance it's this one? It doesn't quite meet your criteria, but it's been stuck in my head for weeks and it's vaguely water-ish and definitely hipster.
It's definitely not Suzanne, it's not Madman Across the Water, it's not the Avett Brothers or the Decemberists, it's not Of Monsters and Men (though that is a song that is frequently in my head), it's not Barton Hollow.
We're getting closer, guys! Only 1 million more songs to go through.
Edit: and I would hum it if I knew it well enough to hum but I don't!

I loves me some Civil War and Of Monsters and Men in the morning. I have no idea what the song could be but will continue to watch this thread just to see what other awesome guesses get posted.

I am also intrigued. I wish I could help! I found this song, but I can't find anywhere to listen to the whole thing/I don't know if it has instrumentation.

Suzanne by Leonard Cohen?
I have no idea what the mystery song could be, but I just thought I'd be unhelpful by saying that this is one of my favourite songs, on what is perhaps the best album ever. So, if anyone doesn't have Suzanne stuck in their heads, they should probably work on that.
