Ah, I see. I don't think I've ever heard anyone actually say this word and my problem was that it is one of those words that confuse my brain because they look like other languages. It even took me a while to recognise a webaddress that was a Swedish sentence without spaces, because the result looked like a Finnish word... I think I pronounce angst almost like a German word.

Wait, ängst like "enkst" or angst like "angst"? Becaust Angst in German is /aŋ(k)st/ and Ängst in German is not a word (but would be /ɛŋ(k)st/). Angst means "fear" and Ängste (/ɛŋ(k)stə/ or ENG-stuh means "fears".

I've only ever heard it pronounced /æŋ(k)st/, with the same vowel as in "bank" or "prankster".

One of those words is it? How would someone from England say it? Gulliver? Someone else? Since my English leans more British anyhow...

Ah! You say something like / ɑŋ(k)st/ then. In my brain, ä is an "eh" sound, hence my confusion!

To me ä is the Swedish letter, pronounced /æ/ (depending on context if you insert it into a word of course).

From Ireland, not Britain, but I would say 're-NAYG' also, like this: http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&lang=e ... rch=renege

I say ăngst.

Do you know what word I always fork up? Especially. I always say ex-speshally. I have no idea why or where I picked it up, but it drives me crazy every time I hear myself saying it.

A former coworker from the US Midwest pronounced pop "pap" and it was hilarious every time she told me she was going out to get a pap, and did I want one.

According to that site 're-NAYG' is the British pronunciation, thanks. I asked about English (as in from England) specifically since the non-Americans answering were from Ireland and Scottland... at times vowel sounds differ (as I'm sure you know). Sometimes I wonder what my accent sounds like to native speakers. It's pretty clear I'm not, but my accent isn't Swedish either. I try to keep it mostly British, but I know I have some American influenced tendencies. It's hard not to since it's the type of English I hear the most. And because my cookbooks are North American I use American words for things relating to food and cooking.
