Basically, if I want a recipe I turn to Isa. If I want a loose guide or need a reference I turn to Mark Bittman.

I only use all of Isa's books, Viva Vegan, and YRR. I have a few others, but since I got all of Isas, they haven't been used much.

Cookbooks are like romance novels to me. I get ashamed when people see how many I have.

For the fifth spot I'll use a magic shelf to hold anything else I'm jonesing on at the moment. (which right now would American Vegan Kitchen, Vegan Vittles, Vegan on the Cheap, VWaV and probably some others)

New Farm gets to be included no matter how many books are squeezed into my top 5 because you'll always remember your first vegan cookbook.

Those are, honestly, the cookbooks I turn to most often. VwaV was the first I really used hard (unlike my first few vegan cookbooks which are so forgettable that I've ... forgotten what they were), to the point where it's stained to hell and starting to fall apart, and VCTOTW is in a similar state. There are other cookbooks I love (Vegan Comfort Food, AVK, YRR) and a few I quite like (Get It Ripe being one), but Isa/Terry books are definitely my favourites.

I like a bunch of cookbooks (we use cookbooks at least 5 times a week), so I couldn't pick five.

-Vegan with a Vengeance This will always have a special place in my heart. I wasn't vegan when I bought it, but I became vegan because of it. My copy looks absolutely disgusting. There are way too many stand-outs to mention. Best cookbook ever.

-Vive le Vegan I love: Miso-curry Roasted Potatoes, Hummus Tortilla Pizzas, and Sunflower-Lentil Pie but with oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes blended into it--this is the best with Tahini Dressing from VWAV over it. The Chocolate P-Nut Butter Squares are so motherforking delicious--this might be one of my favorite recipes ever. FUDGY BROWNIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best brownie recipe ever.

-Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan Thai Chick-Un Pizza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cumin Lime Tofu and Broccoli Cashew Teriyaki Tofu Stir-Fry get made here a lot

-Vegan Vittles I've had this one for a few years and I have used it at least once a week since then. My favorites are: Potato, Tomato, and Cheez Chowder, Barbecued Buffalo Zings (with Soy curls instead of seitan) and Potatoes Gruyere.

-Vegan Brunch Gluten-free buckwheat pancakes are amazing. I love the layout of this book and all the pics and colors.

-New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook The recipe I have probably made more times than any other: Barbecue Soybeans--only with pinto beans instead of soybeans.

-Veganomicon Pineapple-Cashew-Quinoa Stir-Fry and Mushroom-Spinach Lasagna will change your life. Best enchilada sauce recipe ever

-Yellow Rose Recipes Holy fork that guacamole is good. Sesame Green beans and Tofu Marsala are so good. Baked Mac and Cheese is my fave m&c recipe ever--I like to double the sauce recipe.

-500 Vegan Recipes I love the Colcannon recipe with soyrizo instead of seitan.

-Vegan Planet Black Bean Chili with Cilantro Pesto is out of this world. Thai Peanut-Burger Wraps are one of the most memorable recipes I have made.

This is tough. And I have so many cookbooks that I haven't used enough to really comment on (Viva Vegan!, which looks SO good), but so far:

1. Vegan with a Vengeance - not my first vegan cookbook, but the first one I bought as a vegan. I loved everything I made, so it'll always have a place in my favorites list.

2. The Native Foods Cookbook - there are some weird faux meats called for (soy brests? yum!), but if you ignore that and just use what you want (tofu, seitan, Gardein, etc), the flavors are really great. Even the salads are amazing.

3. Eat, Drink, & Be Vegan - I've made a ton of recipes from this and liked them all.

4. Voluptuous Vegan - I actually haven't made too much from this, but each thing was incredible. Time consuming, but really delicious.

5. Cook, Eat, Thrive - this isn't out yet, but I was a tester for it. It's rare that I make the same thing over and over, but so many of these recipes have become staples for me. (And I don't even know the author; I will pimp this book out just because I love it).

I couldn't decide which on my shelf I loved best so I'll go with this as not written in stone:
Vegan Delights (I've only made a few things from this but they were all really good)

Pre-Vcon, I would turn to Vegan with a Vengeance the most. Now, I usually grab Vcon or if I'm feeling crazy, one of my newer books, like The Urban Vegan or American Vegan.

No matter how many cookbooks I get, I always come back to these.

Chicago Diner cookbook

I have so many cookbooks that I've never made anything out of. I just ooh and ahh at the pictures. I really need to start trying some new recipes, at the very least not buy any more cookbooks until I try what I have. I need to try harder, just added two books to my collection today.

1. Veganomicon (for when I want to impress)
2. Vegan Yum Yum (for something quick and tasty)
3. The Joy of Vegan Baking (gets me in trouble more often then not, case in point the half pan of vegan chocolate chip bars my husband and i polished off today)
4. 30 Minute Vegan Taste of the East (some things take like ten minutes, plus homemade coconut ice cream which is BOMB)
5. Vegan A Go-Go (fits in my purse and has ideas for just about every weird pantry predicament you can be in)

I have a lot of cookbooks, many of which I couldn't bring with me to Europe. I still brought 10 or so even though I tend to just rely on a few. My most used:

And I'm sure I'd be using the hell out of Viva Vegan by now if I still lived in America where I could get things like chili peppers. *sigh* But I've made the guatita and it changed my life it was so good.

I'm axiously awaiting the release of Julie Hasson's Vegan Diner. The stuff I tried from it was incredible.

ETA - I didn't put it on my favs list because I don't cook from it as often as I do the others, but VwaV was my very first vegan cookbook. It was my introduction to the PPK and vegan food. So thank you VwaV for opening up my world to awesomeness.

Easy Vegan Cooking by Leah Leneman. Probably the most "normal food you eat on a day to day basis" book I have. Also wins points for being British, so I don't have to google all the ingredients to translate them from American.

Vegan Dad's blog. So good.

The Asian Vegan Kitchen by Hema Parekh. So much variety, and it's really good to see a recipe book that doesn't use soy milk or vegan cheese. It's all traditional, authentic Asian food that is also vegan

Vegan Nom Noms is my friend Nicole's food blog. She's my tummy's soulmate. She published recipes I made up and sent to her from time to time, which is a nice complement.

Can we please make this into a thread of top 10 or 20 favorites? I need help deciding which vegan cookbook to ask for for Christmas, and i already own everything by Isa, Terry, Dreena and Coleen.

ExtraVeganZa would be a good addition.
