Need a super awesome birthday cake idea!

So my bf's birthday is this week, and I usually make him a cake, but I can't think of what kind to make this year. He hates chocolate (crazy, right??), and in the last couple of years I have made him a coconut cake and the carrot cake from vwav. He loves tropical flavours, fruit, vanilla, etc. Help me ppk!

What about Hummingbird cake? It has fruit and nuts in it. There is a recipe for Hummingbird cupcakes (I have been eyeing this recipe for some time) in Quick & Easy Vegan Celebrations. You can easily make it into a cake.

As soon as I saw the thread title, I was immediately going to suggest the raspberry blackout cake from VWAV, but I guess that won't do.

I unfortunately do not have that cookbook (one of the few I don't have I think haha)

OMG Hummingbird cake is amazing. Sweet Avenue makes a vegan one too - maybe sniff around the internet for one? You won't be sorry!

I don't mind chocolate but it's never what I want in a birthday cake. I usually make carrot cake, but banana with peanut butter frosting is really good or a chick o stick cake (vanilla with crushed chick o sticks and pb frosting). Vanilla cake with raspberry jam swirled in, filled with raspberry filling and covered in vanilla frosting is great as well and really any flavor jam would work - mango would be great. I made mango tango cupcakes once which would be great as a cake. I think it was coconut cake with mango curd/sauce inside and coconut frosting.

The coconut lemon bundt cake in vcon is really great. I always get recipe requests when I make it for something.

or lemon bundt cake is also great.

do you have joy of cooking? there's a really super delicious vegan orange cake in my JoC (I could PM you the recipe if you'd like). You could do an orange cake with some orange or lemony frosting.

cakes are fun!

I haven't tried that recipe, but I can vouch for the lemon coconut bundt cake recipe in Veganomicon, 'tis amazing!

Some really yummy ideas in here already! Some other non-chocolate ideas (all drink-inspired, ha!):

Raspberry Lemonade - lemon cake with raspberry buttercream
Cherry Limeade - lime cake with cherry buttercream
Lemon Drop - lemon cake with tart lemon buttercream
Piña Colada - pineapple rum cake with coconut buttercream
Creamsicle - orange cake with vanilla buttercream

lemon macadamia cake! with pineapple, or passionfruit, or mango filling! i would just adjust the recipes from the cupcake book. or whatever basic vanilla cake you like, and adjust accordingly.

but, you know, vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream with berries in the middle, is an elegant, lovely cake. with some marzipan layers over the cakes? so tasty.

if you make the lemon coconut bundt cake from VCon (i think?), with lime instead of lemon, and make an appropriate icing, it makes a kickass birthday cake. hell, even without the icing, it's amazing, but birthday cake requires icing in my house.

Thank you for the ideas everyone! I think I am going to make the lemon coconut vcon cake, but in regular round cake pans rather than a bundt pan (because I don't have one), fill it with lemon curd and put either lemon or coconut cream cheese frosting on it. Yum!

Birthday cake always requires icing. It is essential.

This is what I was going to suggest. It's great with a semon icing, or you can bake it as a layer cake and frost it with butter cream. I think a raspberry butter cream would be great, or spread some raspberry jam in between the layers and then frost.
