Taymer's ham from Caribbean Vegan is to die for! I always make a double batch because it doesn't last long! I dream of using it to make ham and pineapple pizza and a western style scramble one of these days when there are leftovers!

I second (third?) the suggestion to take Fezza up on the Redwood offer. I was actually going to offer to send you some because for some reason, the ham is one of the easiest Redwood products to get here in the Netherlands. It's seriously good (although I admit, I never really like ham before, so I'm not 100% sure how it compares to the real thing). I love it on soft supermarket bread with veganaise.

Oh my, apparently the health food shop in Coleraine is a redwoods stockist. I'll have to get myself there...

My flour-gluten is great for most stuff but intense flavour is hard to achieve by boiling in broth. With a 1 kilo bag you can make 3 to 5 kilos of seitan/ham/whatever. That's an average of £2.50 per kilo of meat alternative. I don't think you'll find many condensed vegan proteins that work out to be so cheap, except for beans and seitan-from-flour. The Redwood stuff is a very nice and convenient option though.

That's true, it just rankles to pay so much postage! That stuff on low carb superstore is £2.90something a bag, but then £11 postage...

Yeah I agree, the postage sucks. But if it's cheaper than other options, even with postage, I might still go for it. Postmen gotta earn a living too I guess. And it gets delivered to your door, so you don't have to spend money on car fuel or time on dragging your kids trough town.

When I feel myself getting bisque-y about postage costs for all the stuff I can't buy locally, I go to an online meat selling place and look at the prices of steak. The stuff I'm buying always feels reasonable after that, especially since they're always ingredients I will use at least a couple of times rather than just eat in one sitting.

Posts like this make me realize what a vegan bi*** I am. When I decided vegan was the way forward I threw all the animal products out and my husband and 5 kids just had to get over it! No animal foods allowed in my kitchen, ever.

I have just enough VWG to try the ham, I think, so if it works well and the kids love it then I'll bite the bullet and buy more online. Generally I prefer the texture of the homemade stuff but it wouldn't work for the ham. Still haven't made it to that health food shop, maybe next week!

Here, you can buy some extra firm smoked tofu with sesame seeds that taste pretty similar to ham - me and my friend always eat a whole pack in one sitting, with dijon mustard on pumpernickel. Maybe you can get a smoked tofu which is similar?

Smoked tofu isn't available this side of the moon I'm afraid ;). Sounds tasty though!
I want a smoker, but that would be a whole 'nother topic...

A couple of packs of the ham, and a couple of cheddar if they have it would be pretty splendid... I haven't got to the shop here. Other than that I'd just love to know what they have...

Cheesly- I believe Sheese is the same as the free from stuff from Tescos and that tastes like the wrong sort of asparagus!

Righto! Yes, the blue sheese is the only one I've been able to like, and too much of it gives me the trotts. The Tesco stuff is dead men's feet, I'm convinced of it.

You iz a star!
I made the Carribean Everyday Ham and it's pretty stonking. The kids say its too spicy though so I may have to tweak to desired blandness :(
I'm going to order some Wheat Gluten, consider bullet bitten.

You may want to take a look at veganstore.co.uk - they have reasonable postage and have 250g packs of "seitan fix", aka VWG for £1.59

They look great, I'm emailing to check rates though - I've... I've been hurt before... ;)
I'm happy to see cosmetics and stuff (I like to pretend I'll wear them some day) and also the household bits (which sadly I use much more!). Shoes too!

Really? I think I stopped ordering from them because they had a surcharge, they must have dropped it, excellent!
I'm hoping to post the ham today or tomorrow, depending on the hound, she has injured her back and can't be trusted to be left alone atm, it'll probably be in the morning xx

Fab, and I checked with them specifically. They say same charges (except you can't take the 24hr option)
