For instance, are you the kind who eats meat?

I know I should probably not let stuff like this make me crazy, but...IT MAKES ME CRAZY.

No, the kind who eats babbys (how is they made?).

I like the quote from a random PPKer - I am the kind of vegan who makes exceptions for stabbing you in the face.

My mom still always offers me salmon when I come visit.

How is it that people have this disconnect that fish is meat too?

there was a reader's digest article posted by i think Herbivore Clothing yesterday on facebook about veganism and why it's not totally crazy to be a vegan.

it was actually a really great little blurb and surprisingly accurate for a mainstream media outlet.

my ONE issue (and it's a big one) is there was something to the effect of:
(this is from my memory not a real quote but the gist of it is correct)
"vegans are people who do not eat ANY animal products at all ever, for part of the week, or certain times of the day"

WAT?

i had oatmeal and OJ for breakfast so im a vegan. then i had veal parm topped wtih bacon for lunch while wearing my fur coat but im totally a vegan....

WAT

I guess that's from Mark Bittman's "vegan till dinner". I'm glad so many mainstream outlets are encouraging people to go meatless, but it does cloud the meaning of the word.

I may have lost my sense of humor after having one too many promised vegan dishes turn out to be fish or chicken. I'm going to have my 7 year veganiversary in March. It hasn't been as complicated for me as all these articles seem to indicate. Or course if you use the definitions in the article, I'm a lifelong vegan.

I think that is part of the 'vegan before 5 movement' or whatever. Basically, eat whatever for dinner, just eat vegan every other time of the day.

My mom went vegan for a while, then vegetarian but then my stepfather kept pressuring her to eat meat so occasionally she gives into fish when they go out to eat. It is such a weird dynamic. I don't know why my stepfather cares and my mom cooks him meat at home although he has definitely reduced the amount of animal products he eats. 99% of the time she eats vegan and she'll eat eggs once a week and maybe eat fish once every month or every 2 months.

"37% of American 'vegetarians' who responded positively when asked if they'd eaten red meat in the past 24 hours"

this is the problem with saying the english language is constantly evolving and words can mean whatever people decide they ought to mean. people are crazy! they don't care what things mean! they'll say anything! we invented "flexitarian" just for you, 37%! use it!

I doubt many people think "vegetarian" means "someone who only sometimes eats meat." I think there's a simpler explanation as to why some people eat meat and call themselves vegetarians: some people, those very same people, are completely full of shiitake.

My sister used to call herself vegetarian but still ate fish. I asked why she did that and she said "It makes it easier for other people to understand." Huh? It just makes other people NOT understand!

i guess ive never heard of this.

seems a tad silly. i mean yeah im all for people cutting however much meat out of their lives as possible but "vegan til dinner" jsut seems odd.
it sort of implies that there isnt such a thing as a good vegan dinner.

if that were true i would be a lot less chunky.

well, we know that, but i really think a lot of them think it's valid on a percentage basis or something. it's like being a locavore; it's the thought that counts.

Well, you get similar results if you ask people "Do you regularly attend church?" and then ask them when they last attended church. Do we conclude that they don't know what "regularly" means in that context? People just delude themselves about questions that go to identity and character. Maybe some people think vegetarian means mostly vegetarian, but I doubt it's anywhere near 37% of self-described vegetarians.

Pesco-pollo-porco-bovo-vegetarian = a vegetarian who, of all meats, eats only fish, chicken, pork, and beef.

*sigh* i know they know what the word means. it's this attitude of "i'm coming close enough that i ought to be able to use this word anyway" that i find irksome. just say you don't eat much meat.

Right, but if they know what the word means then it's not actually a problem to say that words mean whatever people think they mean. There's a big difference between that and giving license to Humpty Dumpty.

it is a problem. it's a bigger problem if they know the difference than if they don't. if you describe yourself as a vegetarian--not mostly vegetarian or vegetarian at lunch or vegetarian except for tuesdays and weekends, but vegetarian--and then you say that you eat meat, you are trying to convince either yourself or others that "vegetarian" can be used to denote "eats some things that aren't meat." whether it's the result of delusion or indifference, that constitutes an attempt to create a new definition of that word, and it's no good, because a word for "sort of vegetarian some of the time" has already been humpty dumptied, and people should take advantage of it. *snaps ruler*

i'm the kind of vegetarian who doesn't like it when her potatoes are touching her green beans.
