don't feel discouraged!!! i remember the very beginning wondering how i was going to make it from 60 seconds one week to 90 seconds the next week. Seriously. I was DYING. Nowadays I am headed out to the gym to run for 30min, no worries. My tendency is to always feel like i'm dying when i exercise, and it took me a while to suss that out. Now I pay attention and think "ok, you're mental, shut up little voice" and "you did 10k the other week, you can do this stupid 5k now". Seriously, before you know it you'll be up there too.
I really couldn't have done Couch to 5k (i just wrote cough to 5k, which was really where I began!!) without two podcasts [and i tried EVERY single C25k podcast out there] that were super inspiring-- i am really, REALLY picky, and don't want music i know, or anything complicated, but i need something uplifting, affirming, and positive-- If you're into music, i super highly suggest the Chubby Jones podcasts for Couch to 5k. She is amazing, friendly, positive, and when you're ready to die she's there with friendly encouragement and killer tunes. I don't like to run outside with headphones, because I'm paranoid, but I did with one headphone on the podcast. On the treadmill, i can plug in and zone out just fine.
Keep up the good work!! Really, I never, ever, ever thought I would be running again.

Thanks torque! And congratulations on your success! I hope to be there too someday.
I did W2D1 this morning and it was fine! Totally not a huge deal like I thought it would be, although I was SO ready to be done by the last run. I actually liked it better than week 1 because there were fewer intervals, even though they were longer. Somehow that made the time go faster.
I've been using the NHS podcasts. The music truly sucks, but I like the lady's voice.

It's just boring. It doesn't make me want to rip my earbuds out or anything, but I think time would go faster if I were more interested in the music. As soon as I get past the intervals (I'm on week 4 right now), I think I'm going to switch. Or just stop using podcasts altogether and keep time on my watch.

I want to do that, but I don't have a good solution for carrying my phone. None of my sweat pants have pockets! I guess I could invest in an armband, but I worry it would be uncomfortable and annoying. Right now I just use an ipod shuffle, which I like because it doesn't weigh anything and clips to my shirt. What do you do with your phone?

Hahaha, I tried that a couple times and was so worried it was going to fall out! Plus I got worried about it getting sweaty.

keep looking til you find a podcast you like! there are buckets. Suz's 5k is another one i just found that was fun (i'm using her 10k program, but i think she did a couch to 5k one too) i also put my ipod in a silicon cover and put it in my bra (ok, actually between my bras, i am generously proportioned and have to double bag)

I finished week 5 tonight! Kind of felt like a rock star when I finished it, to be honest. It wasn't even that hard. I actually enjoyed it. I would now officially recommend this program to anyone. It's been such a positive experience for me so far. I can run 20 minutes now, and I almost can't believe it!

The first time I ran 20 minutes without stopping, I fist pumped in the gym. I was so happy! hahah. I can't run that long anymore, I need to start this again.

Thanks! It was the first time I felt like a "runner." It felt so good not to have to do any walking intervals.
You should do it, baps!

What do you do with your phone? In the summer I just run with phone in one hand and keys in the other. In colder months I have a light running jacket that has pockets. But it really doesn't bother me to just hold my phone.

You should do it, baps! I am, started this morning and feeling good! I was at the gym for 7.15! Which is the best time ever apparently to go to my gym - it was empty!

I got out of the couch to 5k habit a couple months ago (grad school was stressing me out and I couldn't find time to exercise). Now I'm getting back in the habit. I started with week one, but I know I can complete the program (eventually). I even found a friend to jog with.

I ended up having to take a month off after I forked up my ankle, but I'm back now! I regressed during my time off, so I'm backtracking to week 4. I'm supposed to run a 5K with co-workers in a month, and I don't think I'll be prepared to run the whole thing, but we'll see.

I got to week 8 and injured my OTHER ankle! Ridiculous! I am now wondering if it's my shoes (which I still have not replaced) or my feet. Or both. My ankles have always cracked when I walked, so maybe they're just weak?

i would suspect your shoes before your feet. some people are crackly [i know i am] but i don't think that indicates anything.

I know I need to get fitted for shoes. I don't know why I haven't done it yet.

I got new shoes last night! It was kind of a weird experience. I haven't run in them yet because I'm still feeling a lot of pain. My 5K is on Sunday, and I'm pretty sure I will be walking the whole thing. My co-worker is pressuring me to try to run, but I don't want to if I'm not ready!

walk it if you need to! good for new shoes. what's weird?
also, not sure if you blister-- i am the blister queen, and i highly suggest two pairs of socks [thin on the inside, normal on the outside] for your first runs/walks if you do.

Good advice about the socks! I will do that. I'm going to try to walk around in the shoes tomorrow and break them in a little.
The shoe fitting was just a little awkward. I totally appreciated it because I would have been lost trying to pick shoes without guidance, but it's weird having someone analyze your feet like that!
