I fished around in the nail polish threads for info, but saw some contradictory responses on the board (probably due to parent company issues).
Has anyone emailed the companies that make the gel manicure systems (calgel, shellac, etc) to see if they're vegan?
I have an email out to calgel's north american distributor but haven't heard anything back yet, though the internet suggests they don't test.

Depends on how you feel about OPI (owned by a bad parent company) but they told me their gel manicure is vegan. I got it done last summer and if it was done better I might have enjoyed my chip free nails.

if shellac isn't referring to a brand name, then it's not vegan.

shellac's a brand name, and I remember reading somewhere that it actually had no shellac in it.

I just had a quick snoop on google and it seems to be vegan if it is CND Shellac. Also came up on google was these posts.... http://forum.theppk.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=87&start=5375Just done another look on google and it brought up this safety data sheet for one of the CND products.... Quote: Toxicity Data: This product has not been tested on animals to obtain toxicological data. There are toxicology data for the components of this product, which are found in the scientific literature. These data have not been presented in this document. http://www.dosha.org/msds/Shellac%3F%20Color%20Coat.pdfSo I'm guessing that the ingredients have been tested on animals but they don't say whether that data was already available or that they sourced the ingredients from a company that does test or that they test the ingredients themselves.

CND Shellac is vegan and not tested but its not a gel polish. If you have good nails it's great.
Nubar's Gelicure is vegan and cruelty free.
I believe artistic color gloss and young nails mani-q are both not tested but dunno about veganness. I think I read artistic is.
Gelish im not sure about anymore. their msds said they test but they've denied it and said they're releasing a new one but i don't really trust them now!

I was under the impression calgel was actually a hard gel rather than a gel polish (for going over tips or more similar to bio-sculpture) but i'm not 100%. Speaking of Bio, it's a bit stronger than a gel polish and I don't think they test. Again, not sure on veganness. I'll look into it.

yeah, I clearly have no idea what the difference between these products is, I just have the vague sense they're all longer lasting nail polish. so thanks for explaining the difference!
still no word from calgel though.

I don't know about Calgel's vegan-ness or testing but I looked it up and it is similar to bio sculpture, in that it's a soak off gel product but not a gel polish. So it's a bit stronger than gel polish and they can put it over tips if you want extensions. You can't do that with gel polish unless you have a gel builder underneath.

Has anyone heard of Perfect Match? The salon I go to has loads of their gel colors. http://www.lechatnails.com/home.htmIt looks like they don't test; I'm going to email them.

I emailed CND back in October and received this: Thank you for contacting CND. CND creates products from a combination of chemicals, vitamins, and botanicals. CND is animal friendly as well as environmentally friendly. We are diligent in our research and development of safe products and take great pride in providing the finest quality products to Nail Professionals and Consumers. There is no need for any type of animal by-products in our products as these are "chemical" treatments. Also, since these products are not made for use on animals they are not tested on animals.
Too chemical. Ha.
