I have never been a monopoly fan, and have also never finished a game. When I did play, I was always the dog. No ifs, ands or butts. Doggie token is mine and I'll fight for it, bisque.
What was much more common was for me to act as the banker, but not actually play. Though I was still the dog. See above statement.
I remember desperately wanting mousetrap as a kid. And I got it! And then I realized that I lived in the middle of nowhere and my only sibling at home was 8 years older than me and wouldn't play with me. So I would set up the game and just play as the mice, but not the game itself. This went on for two weeks and I broke it.

I am still sure I have never seen the other pieces, though. If anyone else has addressed this I am not sorry. Imagine reading through six pages of you lot! P.S. I don't want any of the new pieces. I know I've seen the cannon before, but the ship looks unfamiliar. Maybe we were just missing a piece in our family set, though?

You guys, I've been reading the Richard Burton diaries and I swear to god, all through 1940 (when he was only a 14 to 15-year-old lad) he played monopoly. That seemed to be the highlight of his life then. Every day is a notation of a monopoly game (and sometimes two!). And reading that totally made me think of this thread. And I also wondered which monopoly token he chose, since that is the most key information and the only interesting thing to me about monopoly-playing in general.
Later, when he hooked up with Liz Taylor, they got heavily into Yatzee (which was a new game in 1965 or so). One of the pages of his diary is, in fact, a Yatzee scorecard. So if you ever wonder what iconic Hollywood lovers might possibly do with their spare time they, among other things, they have Yatzee tournaments! (And probably Monopoly, though he doesn't mention this. Probably wore himself out on the game in the 1940s).
