I've recently gotten back on the bike myself. I do 10.3km (about 6.4mi) a day.

I'm now relocated to Portland, so I'm shopping for a team there and will be doing road races starting late January. I even got some road shoes! Wow road racing starts in January up there? thats wild. When do you get time to prepare for road season coming off cross??!

You don't!
Josh, I'll keep you posted, but I'm primarily searching through Let's Race Bikes, which is an initiative targeted at getting women into bicycle racing. I was contacted about the veg team, which I'll be a part of but probably won't be racing for, since I think I need a larger team with folks who can mentor me, since I know nothing. Hopefully I'll see you at the club rides, though?

Wild. i thought March was early enough for races to start around here. At least the weather has been amazing as of late.

howd you accidentally register for a race??! Does look like fun though. Confused how 3.5 mi loop = 2hrs though.
Whats whiteface 100?
Random question: does anyone have any suggestions on a packable pair of rain pants that arent wildly baggy?

i've marshalled at the last 3 they've done on that course, and the organisers (who are regular riding buddies of mine anyway) gave me free entry if i wanted it. and added me to the starting list before i'd replied! basically, it's as many laps of that loop as you can do in the 2 hours. if it's the normal february weather (i.e. 6-10 inches of mud on at least of the course), i'll be very happy if i manage 4 laps...

ahh got yah. 6-10in of mud is no joke. id go with a tall bike to keep the feet from getting too dirty. sounds like a good time though.

i'm also gonna be riding clipped in for the race, which i've never done before. picking up my pedals tomorrow (shimano M530s) so i've got 3 weeks to get used to riding attached to my bike...

I agree. I think being clipped in riding single track and hopping things at first is weird/scary but youll love it soon. Plus mtb clipless pedals are much easier to get in/out of compared to road systems. It finally got cold around these parts. The icebeard was out in full force all week.

I've been getting the eyelash icicles. No pictures though. Got a balaclava for a 'ninja race' (running) and used it last week for bicycling too. Which was necessary with the single digit temps we'd been getting. It gets SO disgusting though by the end.

This morning was one of the most annoying bike rides in to work. They hadn't plowed most of the bike path yet and what they had was still crummy. Ended up switching between the road and the path and should just have gone up a different street. Hoping the ride home is much easier.

so i fitted my new pedals and got myself some shoes to go with them (mavic switchbacks), and headed out on my SS commuter bike to test out riding clipped in. piece of cake! i clipped in and out really easily, and getting power down felt so much quicker/easier than on flats. i'm not going to abandon flats completely; still plan on riding DH a bit/jumping/playing on skills/freeride-y type trails, and i don't think i'd enjoy doing that clipped in. i do think it's going to be a sensible choice for this race though, and i'll probably keep them on my commuter long term after the race.

I just started using a road system on my road bike, but I still love me some spds.
So, I am now living in Portland, and I just got invited to join a really awesome women's cycling team, and I am super stoked. The only downside is we're sponsored by Powerbar, and they don't appear to make a single forking vegan thing! Oh well. We're also sponsored by Ninkasi brewery, one of my favorites.
So stoked for my first road racing season!

God, I wish! I'll be watching it from a bike shop here in Portland.

Went out with a few women this morning as a sort of intro to racing.....my goodness I am knackered. I think I'll stick to pootling around/racing against myself in triathlons this year but maybe next season after some serious training! Track starts again in a few weeks too weee!
