LisaPunk, your 'birthday lunch' stories are the best/worst.

haha, yesterday we had cupcakes in the office for Valentine's Day and my boss said "It makes me sad you can't have these. Does it make you sad?" I was like "uhhh...I dunno?" Not really, until you put it like that!

That kinda reminds me of a peeve.

I hate when someone brings in something like a variety box of chocolates or biscuits, and one type might be vegan, but you can't tell because all the ingredients for all the types are listed in one big block (rather than individually by type). The dark chocolate thing or the bourbon cream might be vegan, but you'll never know for sure, and therefore you don't get anything.

the worst is October which is my bday month and im the only employee who was born that month.

the year i wanted to get Middle Eastern food from a place across the street (FALAFEL!) was a disaster!

the food was amazing and there was even kabobs (steak and chicken i think) and i think like 5 people went and everyone else hid at their desks and complained about the smell.

seriously people step outside your box.

At my old job we had a pretty small staff (five people, plus some interns) and we would go out to lunch for people's birthdays. The person with the birthday got to pick the restaurant, and their meal would be paid for, but everyone else was expected to pay their own way. (That also sucked for other reasons--it was rude not to go, but I totally ended up putting some stupid meals on my credit card when my checking account was in single digits.) The office was in downtown Portland anyway, so most restaurants had something I could eat and knew what vegan meant, so I was definitely lucky in that regard even if I didn't really feel like getting an overpriced stir fry from Mother's AGAIN. When it was my turn to choose a restaurant I chose a Middle Eastern place, and my bosses were SO suspicious of the restaurant. Not because it was Middle Eastern--again, we're talking liberal Portlanders here, they were familiar with Middle Eastern food--just because I was vegan and I chose it so they assumed it would be weird. They were very relieved once they got there and read the menu.

A new bistro was opened last week in Zagreb. I checked the menu on the Internet. Home-made tofu with mushrooms and spinach, and the price was affordable. Yum. Conventional (not ethnic) restaurants serving tofu are, AFAIK, non-existent here. I went there on Saturday.

I ordered black tea. My SO ordered vegetarian quiche and coffee.
Me: Do you have any vegan food?
Waiter: We have quiche.
M: No, that contains cheese, and eggs.
W: Oh, vegan? No, we don't. Thank god we don't. I don't support that culture. Vegetarianism, yes, but not that. [I'm speechless, so he continues] We used to have some tofu, but there are eggs in it.
M: How do you make it so that it contains eggs?
W: I don't know, 18 eggs went into it.

By that point it's obvious that he is trying to divert me from ever eating there. I was on the verge of cancelling my tea order, but I decided to have it any way. It was Lipton, not Milford which was listed. I know Lipton doesn't test on animals any more, but there's too little tea per bag and I have to use 2 bags per cup. So I drank bland black tea. My SO told me to send an official complaint by mail and to write this on Croatian forums. I still haven't. (I wrote down our dialogue immediately and my SO confirmed the authenticity.)

Last year the boyfriend's work team went to our fave Thai place for a staff lunch since it is super vegan friendly. Well, some of them were not happy, people were asking if they had sushi...um?

The acronym for the Standard American Diet couldn't be more appropriate.

I get so frustrated when people won't step outside their meat, potatoes, and an overcooked veggie (and most of the time it's corn) box.

Speaking of corn that's another veggie I don't like, and apparently another one vegans or supposed to love. And not only do I not like corn, I won't eat anything with corn syrup or any other corn derived garbage in it. I'll eat organic corn chips or organic corn tortillas. And people are always like oh but why don't you eat corn, it's a veggie? My response is that I don't consider genetically modified pesticide written packaged cancer to be food. Which some people understand less than veganism.

He might have, because other, polite waiter took over our table (and we didn't ask for it). Well, they will never see me again.

Luckily, there's a world food fast food with a polite and knowledgeable waitress a few metres away, so I had veggie piadina, green tea mochi, and red bean paste mochi there.

But how will you get enough nutrients if you don't eat your corn?

Just kidding. I eat things like fresh corn and corn tortillas and things in concert with other foods, but I'm actually quite sensitive to the presence of corn-derived sweeteners and stuff like that because half my family is very allergic to corn. I still find myself checking the labels of everything for corn products because I was taught to do that growing up, even though I don't have the allergy.

I actually don't like corn really, but there is organic corn if someone doesn't want gmo corn. I do eat plenty of corn chips and corn tortillas though and I like corn bread. Just not corn by itself.

I love corn. In fact, I love fruit masquerading as veggies. Whenever I think of my favorite vegetables, it goes like this: "I love corn. Oh, but isn't that's a fruit, technically? Well, I also love avocado, winter squash, cucumber and eggplant... Hum, wait a second..."

I don't think Corn can be classified as a fruit but it is a grain.

I thought corn was technically a grain? Either way, I love it and I eat it and you can pry it out of my genetically modified pesticide written packaged cancer-filled hands.

Edit: yeah, so, I was the third to say it's a grain. Whatever!

Yeah, I must get epic amnesia from eating beets because my first trip to the bathroom the next days ends up with me FREAKING OUT - and remembering the beets about 5 minutes later.

i love corn on the cob in the summer from the farmer's market!
it's the only time of the year we can get tasty corn in new england!

i have no idea if it's GMO or what it's been sprayed with but it sure is tasty eatin!

^lol, well veggie, grain fruit whatever, I just don't like it! I like chips and tortillas but if it's not organic I won't touch it, or any corn derived weird food things.

Since poop came up, I've never experienced what this "vegetarian poop" is supposed to be like that's different then omni poop. I don't like people assuming I have weird poop because I'm vegan. Nor do I understand why anyone would waste time wondering what my poop is like.

Have people really asked you about your poop? I've only heard vegans (and my husband) talk about vegan poo.
