May the deployment pass quickly, Annak!
Mr. Sz is finally coming home this weekend after a year overseas.
It will be over before you know it!

Annak- I could do a weekday meetup depending on time, and my 3 year old would be with me, so you wouldn't be the only one with a kid. I can't take my 5 year old there though, so we can only go when she is at school.

I'm down to meet up whenever I'm in town. I'll be traveling for the next two weeks, but don't have any plans till June after that.

Hey everybody,

Next year I'll be doing an external rotation for veterinary school at the San Diego Zoo, but I'm not sure where the best place to look for temporary housing might be. Craig's List isn't giving me any good leads. If anyone knows a better website to check out, I'm going to be in San Diego for just 3 weeks next March. I don't really intend to start ironing anything out until later this year, but I'm applying for travel scholarships and I'm trying to calculate out a budget for room & board for application purposes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

For just 3 weeks, I would consider a Residence Inn or ExtendedStay type place. You might be able to find a short-term sublet or vacation rental closer to Hillcrest or North Park, though.

Since the thread has been bumped: Whoa. Donuts and beer at TigerTiger, totally awesome.

Camuscando: Welcome in advance! Will you have transpo? Hillcrest and North Park are great and within easy bicycling to the zoo. A bit farther east will be less expensive. Maybe check the San Diego Reader?

No transportation, but I'm considering having my bike shipped if the area is bikeable. Will check out the link. Thanks!

San Diego is getting more bikeable by the day!

Here's a bike map: http://www.icommutesd.com/bike/bikemap.aspx There is some download you need to view the interactive map but you can also scroll down to .pdfs. Also, I'm sure they will mail you a nice hard copy map; there's a link there somewhere. The bike shops here also have the map.

While there are not many separate dedicated bike-only paths that are useful for commuting, the bike lanes and bike routes are definitely improved. We now have a couple of green lanes and some sharrows on main east-west routes (El Cajon Blvd; Adams Ave) which connect North Park to points east (where living is a bit cheaper.) Lots of people commute by bike in this area and you'll see plenty of groups of riders on weekend mornings out and about the town.

The San Diego Bicycle Coalition is an active advocacy group that also has some info: http://www.sdcbc.org/

My husband's been hit on his way to work, and a good friend of ours got run over by a bus while cycling in to work. Ugh.

Hubby still commutes by bicycle (well, when he's around, he's deployed now) and it makes me worry like crazy. We got spoiled living in Amsterdam, where the idea of what constitutes a bike lane is fundamentally different.
