I have something like seven or eleven hours to kill at the San Francisco airport tomorrow (at least I think it's tomorrow? I land on March 3, but I'm in Osaka right now, so it's already March 3). Any suggestions for what to do/eat? Anyone want to keep a jetlagged vegan company?

The airport itself has a Plant Cafe which has an awesome beet burger and some other good vegan options. Either at Plant or some other restaurant very near there, someone sells Pepple's donuts which are vegan. They're usually not very fresh though.

If you've got a full 7-8 hours to kill, get the hell out of the airport! There's not that much great stuff there to eat. You can take BART right from the airport and be in the mission in under half an hour. With that kind of layover you could even head into the east bay! Here are some good spots near BART stations:

24th St Mission: walking distance to St. Francis fountain (great vegan brunch but will be a long wait on a Sunday, but then again if it's just you they can squeeze you in quickly @ the counter), Sunshine Restaurant (I may be off on the name, it's a vegan-friendy salvadoran resto on 24th), Rosamunde (beer and sausages with field roast) and mission pie, which has vegan pie.

16th St Mission: walking distance to a million taquerias (not going to start an endless 'which is better' debate here, but I personally like El Toro at 17th & Valencia, and their sister restaurant Pancho Villa, which is literally 1/2 block from BART on 16th), Chile Lindo empanadas on 16th has a vegan option, Cha Ya (vegan Japanese), Gracias Madre, Weird Fish, Rainbow Grocery (all vegetarian co-op), Dinosaur (vegan banh mi), Ike's Place (huge messy sammiches), Red Lantern (vegan dim sum) and a ton more.

Civic Center: v. close to Ananda Fuara and Thai Idea

Powell St: close to Loving Hut (in the basement of Westfield Shopping Mall)

Embarcadero: walking distance to The Plant (Pier 3 building), Delica (Ferry Building/Pier 1), Pepple's Donuts (Ferry bldg)

12th St. Oakland: Souley Vegan (10 min walk), Golden Lotus

19th St. Oakland: another Ike's Place

Ashby: Flaco's Tacos!

Berkeley: Saturn Cafe, Cinnaholic, Cha Ya

North Berkeley: Pizza Moda

that's about the range of my BART riding skillz, so if anyone else has some yummy food near BART stops, feel free to chime in!

For some reason, I almost always end up flying out of this area. It's also where they have the yoga room. I guess it's the stereotypical San Francisco wing of SFO.

This is so amazingly helpful! Thank you!

I stored my shiitake and am on the AirTrain to the BART. Never had Salvadorian before, so I'm shooting for that but am generally open to adventure! g

It's actually called Sun Rise Restaurant - http://sunriserestaurantsf.com/

Their vegan breakfast burrito is awesome.

Thanks! Found it. Ordered the vegan fajitas and a side of platanos. Hope I have room for Mission Pie after (I haven't eaten properly in about two weeks).

Oh it did! Apple ginger pie! I had hoped to find doughnuts while I was around, but Philz coffee was out and Dynamo was closed. I got a couple of cookies at Philz, though. My phone was dying, so now I'm back at the airport until 11:20 PM FML.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Sounds like a lovely day, overall! Glad you could get out and enjoy some fresh air before your next flight.

Thanks, me too! It made up for my shitty journey far more than the 1500 yen airport food voucher and $75 airline credit I probably won't use.
