How does one go about replacing quinoa in a recipe? Would basmati rice work? A lot of recipes lately call for it but as many of you know I am deathly allergic to it...And to quote Biggie Smalls if you don't know - now you know!

What about millet? It takes a little longer to cook but is small like quinoa. I've cooked with millet a number of times and really like it. Though I never subbed it for quinoa - we eat a ton of quinoa in our house. I think it could work. Or perhaps couscous which cooks even quicker than quinoa.

Depends on the recipe I guess, if you need something with similar cooking time/properties, white rice would probably work, but it's not a whole grain, so you'd loose the nutritional benefits of quinoa. Other alternatives might be (whole wheat) couscous, bulgur or millet.

I'd definitely go couscous. Maybe barley?

Couscous or brown short grain rice... Those would be my two top choices!

I hate quinoa, so I generally replace it with millet.

I've been on a big barley kick since I discovered you can make it in the rice cooker (2 1/2 cups water to 1 cup barley) and use it in pretty much the same way I would quinoa (or rice for that matter!).
