the philly airport used to really be inept. i had accidentally brought my 5-6" switchy-blade thingy to and from somewhere. (i don't remember mailing it to myself, so both airports must have completely missed it. maybe it was cause the whole thing is metal, so it looked like a blob. like a possible make-up case or something.)

however, last year's incident does make up for it. i accidentally left my 1/4" brad-point drill bit in my food cooler wrapped up in a chocolate wrapper to keep it from puncturing my cooler (i had it at my internship and had totally forgotten about it once i moved all my shiitake home. i used it to drill holes in yogurt cups for seedlings.) my questioner was really cool about it and didn't do anything else to me. i think he realised it really was an accident cause i exclaimed "hey! my brad-point drill bit! i was wondering where that was!" and was all happy he had found it. (unfortunately the shipping would have been more than it was worth, so he kept it, and i mourn for the loss, cause those things aren't common.)

That AP article about what to wear makes this whole thing more ridiculous.



Maybe we should all wear uniforms in order to fly! Also the article begins by describing how one woman, wearing a long skirt, had to get patted down bc they couldn't tell what was under her skirt.



This is just unfair. And for long skirts? I'm sure most Orthodox women are just not going to fly.

The wardrobe "guidelines" are the last straw for me. Really? Either I go for their radiation and naked photos or they are going to tell me what to WEAR to make it easier for them to assault me?

I am chesty and I need an underwire bra. I will be wearing one. I wear skirts. I will be wearing one. If they want me to take off my forking bra and if they want to put their hands up my skirt, I am ready for that. I will be traveling with a video recorder and they will have to assault me in front of the rest of the airport. I really see this as retraumatization and I can't believe I have to get mentally prepared for this.

This is the last time I'll be flying till this goes away. From now on, it will be the train.

But then the mustards win. Sue them instead. I know, I know, it's a pain in the asparagus, but I'm sure you won't be the only one.
I wonder how many TSA agents are dreading going to work tomorrow.

I'm not going to lie, I intentionally wore super tight jeggings and a tank top through security yesterday in hopes of not being picked for scanning. The airport going back doesn't have scanners though, so I'll probably wear a dress.

It kinda sucks either way, though, because something like leggings just means you'll feel their grimey paws better if they do pick you.

Reminded me that, next month when I fly to London, I probably will fold and not do too much to thwart my getting there to see my boyfriend. But on the way back, when I'm just returning to work? Bring it.

I do own a pair of mom-jeans....I might put some things in there, like lollipops and a dictionary and some cat toys, and make them pull them out one by one.

Oh, really? You're being exposed to radiation on a daily basis with no protection when you're underground x-raying luggage for hours. Did they inform you of any risks of that during your TSA training? I can't help but wonder what the effects of this could be... guess we'll see in the upcoming years?

If they see you recording they will likely confiscate your recording device and delete all recorded video, so Qik has been recommended for those with phone cameras.

that's great! but seriously, why would airport designers make customs funnel to only the secure area? there should be a secure area option AND a baggage carousel area option. that way nobody who is exiting the airport needs to be groped/pornoscanned.

I'm really pissed about the NYTimes front page article (website) that paints a pretty picture of airports and says everything is going swimmingly, no protests, &c. It doesn't mention at all that 1) people who are against it likely, for the most part, avoided flying today, and 2) the passengers quoted as saying "I'm all for what will keep me safe" are sadly uninformed, taking whatever the govt/TSA is providing as substantiated fact. Arghhh.

I just read on CNN that 4/5 support it. So does the president. I thought it would have been less support because of all the BS that has happened to people. But maybe it's because we are more interested in this whole ordeal and reading more about it.

I wish some public figure, someone famous would stand up agaisnt it.

I didn't read this whole thread (it's 15 pages!), but are they really just picking some people to get scanned? I flew out of Boston a couple months ago and it looked like everyone had to go through it. I'm kind of glad I didn't realize how detailed their view was at the time.

Of course, I forgot to take the knife off my keychain, and that made it through security just fine.

I want a reach-around with my patdown. If they can provide that, then I will go along with the rest.

Things I have accidentally taken through security:
A 7-inch pair of scissors
Shaving razors (I used to SI; I have the scars to prove those forkers can do some damage)
A lighter full of fuel
Boxes of matches, including a box of strike-anywhere and a box of waterproof matches
A pipe bomb, FFS! (Funny story, that... There's a reason they tell you to check if anyone has tampered with your luggage.)
A combination of braces, glasses, big earrings, metal necklace, metal-boned corset, watch, belt with chains on it, and a couple dollars in mixed coins in my pockets - didn't set off the metal detector.
(ETA: I'd forgotten, but also? The pipe bomb was in a jar of dirt. Nobody thought to question the wisdom of carting a jar of dirt in and out of the UK? Well, I guess we're not worried about foot and mouth any more, then...)

Things I have had taken away by security:
A rounded metal nail file
A studded bracelet from Claire's
A geometry set which didn't even have a compass in it
