i briefly check out this forum to get the heads up on white owl social club and am incensed to see that discussion of the bonzai aphorodite post has turned into a bisque fest about health vegans. man...talk about issues.

i guess many of you missed this: "My liver had been abused by many years of heavy drinking".
and, btw, saturated fat is a treatment for liver disease, not a slam on health vegans or a rationalization for the "baketivist" lifestyle.

one more thing: NDs in oregon are board-certified primary care physicians that can run full diagnostics (including radiology), can prescribe drugs (including scheduled drugs), and can perform minor surgery.

The only reason I briefly check out this forum is to read Interrobang's toaty wee buckets of scorn.

You're only saying this because you're a white owl who eats cookies. Or a cookie shaped like an owl. Or something.

I was hoping for more discussion of the owl cookies.

Anyway, I've been working to embrace more fat in my diet. It is hard plus I have the threat of gallstones reactivating but so far, I've made progress. I'm not ready for avocado/coconut oil smoothies but I use a variety of oils. The mushroom/walnut spaghetti bolognose in Chloe's kitchen is brilliant (although I added more sauce for a thinner consistency) and something I would've shied away from years ago. Also, my skin has been especially dry this winter which is another good reason to maintain a healthy level of oil.

my liver has been hurting again the last few days and i think its because I ate too much fat... I am tempted to go back to low-fat veganism because right now my skin is crappy, my digestion isn't fun, etc, and Im still not un-convinced. I mean, low fat raw veganism is a no no now, but "normal" low fat. I still haven't read anything credible that tells me why Id need oil? I have been eating more of it to get comfortable around it, but my body hasn't been liking it.

Well you need fat but the amount of fat you need isn't necessarily a lot. Many viramins require fat to be absorbed as well as certain bodily functions require fat.

What forms of oil are you eating? If your 'liver hurts', are you saying you are getting abdominal pain? I'm wondering if you have gallstones (which can be caused by many things including eating a low fat diet for an extended period). I'd recommend a visit with a doctor to discuss any pain associated with eating fat.

I got my gallbladder removed last year because it was full of stones and it caused a lot of pain. So my liver has to do "more" anyway.

Yes, but I don't need oil per se, do I? Is there an actual advantage health wise (I know there is cooking wise!) for eating oil instead of avocados and nuts? Because I feel "oily" stuff is harder for me to stomach than nuts of avo. Though coconut milk or something along these lines makes me sick ..

Yes, I actually think my gall stones were caused by excessive dieting and then "splurging" and eating a lot of fat. It's pretty complicate because for me: fat=good, too much fat or the wrong fat = ouch

Maybe Im just stressed too much right now (exams period, fear of failing, etc) so my body reacts to that. I would certainly like a stress-cure..

Well no one needs oil, just we need fats in general. It doesn't matter how you get them. For someone that has had their gallbladder removed, most likely you'll need to follow a low fat diet for the rest of your life. I have heard some instances where the body will remake itself a pseudo gall bladder and a low fat diet isn't required but that seems to happen in a small percentage.

You need essential fatty acids. RDA (daily intake that fulfils the need of about 97.5% of the population) of omega 3 (ALA) for women is 1.1 g, and RDA of omega 6 (LA) for women is 11 g. Of course, you can get them all from nuts, seeds, and other whole foods.

And I think those is the 'no oil' camp really believe eating fats/oils/etc is EVIL and detrimental to your health. If you limit fats for your own purposes, I see nothing wrong with that except that I also believe it was a factor that contributed to me having gallstones. Some people do well on high fat diets, some do well on lower fat diets, it is largely personal preference and no judgements should be made one way or another.

Oh, I definitely think people can be healthy on high-fat diets, it just scared me that some people seemed to imply (not on here) that without oil I would get ill or something. I think I got ill through eating too little fat (eating too little in general) and now I have to keep eating this little to not get worse...

I do take DHA supplements.

Without fats, you can get ill but its not oil in general that is required. Without a gall bladder though, you'll just need to do some trial and error to see what fats suit you better and amounts.

Interesting article. Thanks for posting it. Just finished the book Eating Animals and still pondering that line from his grandmother.

You can also get stones in your bile duct. I had my gallbladder removed and my bile duct cleared (twice because the first specialist sucked, so 3 "surgeries" in one week). From my understanding it is still possible to get stones again, in the duct. I haven't had to follow a low fat diet though, but sometimes fatty foods give me digestive issues. But it is never like "ouch, my liver hurts!" I don't think it is painful for a liver to make bile. It might not know the right amount to make and hence, digestive issues. But if it feels like your liver hurts, something is probably wrong. That is not normal.

I don't know what exactly hurts after some meals, it's just "the right side under my chest"...
