I'm mostly starting this thread because Aldi! has! vegan! Aero! blocks!

The brand is "Dairy Fine", which you'll inevitably read as "Dairy Free" and then be disappointed, but in fact the dark chocolate "ChocoAir" ones are vegan and amazing.

VEGAN AERO BARS. Now they just need to make a mint version.

I'm so obsessed with that stuff! I hate Aldi, but I can put up with it just to get Aeros. Their speculaas biscuits are pretty good, too.

My other new favourite thing is raspberry Noble Choice chocolate. I bought a block to try a piece and keep it as a pick-me-up kind of snack in my filing cabinet at work, but I guess I blacked out because fifteen minutes later there was no more chocolate. Just deliciousness and a feeling of shame hanging over me.

I never go into Aldi. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and go in. I like those Goji/Acai berry bars you can get in the health food section (even though they're a giant placebo). They're tasty and chocolatey.

Twins! Sweet William white chocolate was my dirty little secret for the longest time. It's not even that good! I just can't stop eating it once I start.

Does anyone know if Whittaker's is fair trade? I'm assuming not. :(

Both Whittaker's and Sweet William are on Food Is Power's 'Can't recommend, but are working on it' list: http://www.foodispower.org/chocolatelist.php.

When I first discovered Sweet William white chocolate I ate an entire block in about half an hour. That was years ago now and I still can't even look at it!

Also, out of curiosity, Erin, what's your objection to Aldi?

Nothing serious, I just find it super messy and disorganised and it stresses me out. I also hate that they never seem to have express lanes and I have to wait in line with my one block of chocolate, behind a dozen people buying shiitake in bulk.

Sweet William white chocolate is like my vegan barometer. My tattoo artist recommended it when I first went vegan, telling me it was the best thing ever. I tried it and thought it just tasted like sadness. But now when I get it to bake with or something, I find myself eating half the block and actually enjoying it. The first time that happened, I felt like I'd arrived as a real vegan.

Yeah I'm with you on this one. I always go in excited and then can't find anything I want (unless they're selling jumping castles or some shiitake) and end up leaving with a packet of chips. And the last chips I had from there tasted funny and gave me a stomach ache :(

good man

I'm with you on the Aldi 'hate' though. even just navigating past other shoppers is hard enough - it always feels they're more erratic/chaotic. I think it's because you can see over into other aisles and that makes it feel small/crowded/disorderly

I wish we had Aldi here, vegan aero bars sound so good!!

I love sweet william white choc too and luckily I can get that at the supermarket accross the road, but that's also kinda a bad thing cause I end up getting it too often. But they seem to have stopped selling leda mintons here :( I haven't seen them at the supermarket or organic shop in ages, they do sell the plain chocolate ones but I don't like them nearly as much.

I find Sweet William white chocolate way too sweet, and a bit waxy, but it's great in cooking - like white chocolate and passionfruit cheesecake! The Whittakers dark chocolates are fantastic.

Can we please talk favourite soy milks? I was hooked on Woolies Macro, but I hate Woolies so much with their aggressive corporate behaviour, so now I drink Vitasoy Soy Milky - the fresh, full-cream one - and I love it. Mild and not beany at all, with a slight evaporated milk taste, and it actually looks like dairy milk, not brown and syrupy. Some soy milk gets more beany tasting when you heat it, but this doesn't, and it also isn't excessively sweet or have a discernible malty or vanilla flavour, so it's great for savoury recipes. Any other brands I should be trying?

Yeah, but you know what tastes extremely similar to Bonsoy (original Bonsoy, when it still had seaweed in it), but is made in Australia? The light blue Pureharvest (Calcium-enriched). It's really really good.

I used to drink Vitasoy but I find it waaaay too sweet and cloying now.

I must try this Pureharvest next time I'm back. the Vitasoy barista mix seems pretty solid in hot chocs, but I've never owned a carton myself

Although I find Calci-Plus too sweet and syrupy, I don't find Soy Milky sweet or cloying at all, and I have very little sugar in my diet so I'm usually quite sensitive to sweet stuff.

I'll have to give Pureharvest a try too! I used to drink Bonsoy, but on top of the whole iodine thing, I once bought two cartons together, and both of them had an overwhelming smell of stagnant water. There's no way I was even going to taste that, and I haven't bought it since. I also poured out a glass of So Good once and it had a millipede in it. When I called the complaints line I was just told that it was not possible that the milk was contaminated. Very helpful. There are plenty of reasons not to drink So Good, but the awful, bloated millipede is enough on its own.

That is horrifying! (Both the Bonsoy and the So Good experiences).

There's something about the particular kind of creaminess that Vitasoy has that doesn't taste good to me. I'm not quite sure why. I guess "sweet and cloying" isn't quite the right way to describe it, but I don't have the right words.

The only bad thing about the calcium-enriched Pureharvest is that it's very rarely in supermarkets these days. It used to be, but it seems like they've stopped stocking it, which makes me really sad. It usually requires a trip to the health food store (but pretty much all of the ones I've been to in Melbourne have it, hopefully it's the same elsewhere).

After I finish the carton of Vitasoy Soy Milky I have in the fridge, I'll have to try Pureharvest. Is it available in Woolworths? I discovered So Delicious Coconut Milk last year and loved it but unfortunately it's become quite difficult to find. I wish there was someone in Australia who made coconut milk!

Speaking of products that are difficult to find, does anyone know where I might be able to purchase Butler Soy Curls (or an alternative) from in Australia?

I think you can usually get Pureharvest from Woolworths, but not often the calcium-enriched one. The regular (yellow carton) one is also pretty good, although it's slightly sweeter than I usually like.

I haven't seen soy curls anywhere, but I'm sure this brand "Explore Asian" used to do dried soy "chicken" chunks.... all I can find for them now is their black bean spaghetti and mung bean fettuccine though. Sorry, that's not very helpful!
